today I build my AMD system. both NEW RETAIL xp 1900+ on epox 8kha+(U= bio chip)... I had put alpha 8045 HS on it and artic silver 3 on the core and HS bottom coppper, so it shouldn't be cooling problem, does AS3 cause the failure if i put too much?... since I just built it and it's never been overclocked. now both my motherboard and cpu is damaged. when I boot the system, no screen or anything just about10 second then I smell burning, didn't even have chance to get in bios or window! WTF????

Now, who I should get help from? ask AMD to replace the chip? will they pay me to buy new MB? cuz it fired my 8kha+

Or go the other way blame epox for firing my cpu??

plz give me advice!

If you actually could smell it burning, i think your Alpha wasnt on right, and it might not have had proper contact with the core.

AS III shouldnt have been the problem, but could have possibly shorted out your chip if it squished out onto the bridges of the cpu.

as3 doesn't cause anything like this. are you sure that the heatsink was mounted properly? incorrect mounting (where the core is not in direct contact with the heatsink) is responsible for the vast majority of cpus burning up.

Exact same thing happened to me with a 1900+ on a KR7A. I sent it back to the retailer after I talked to Abit. Try that.x

thanks for the advises! but what should I do with the fried xp 1900+?!?! will AMD covers it with warrantee? I didn't OC the chip but does have some AS3 marks on it, wonders will AMD denies the warrantee when they see the AS3 marks on the chip.

:(

These new organic XP chips really smell when they get burnt (somewhat crispy). I have learned it the hard way with an 1800XP.

I fried a xp1700 couple of days ago. I was readjusting the heatsink and and after i was done, I turned on the power and heard a small pop, and the notorious burning smell.

Best thing to do now is just calm down, take a deep breath, gather yourself together, go find your reciept, and take the chip to whereever you purchased it for a free exchange.

I received my replacement today and looking back, it was silly for me to panic since the chip is under 30 day warranty.

I think ur best shot it to talk to the retailer and see what happens. DO keep as posted what happens.

Really guys, why do you insist on making the companies pay for your mistakes? If the HSF wasn't on right it's your own fault. In my opinion you should eat the cost yourself.

Riiiiight, Im sure you would eat the 200+ dollars instead of trying to get an RMA. Not all of us our rich that can just say " Oh well, time for me to spend another 200+ dollars, Im sure the wife wont mind "

The point is is that he DID put the heatsink on right, so it wasnt his fault. I have accidently put a Thermaltake Super Orb on backwards so the heatsink was touching the plastic part of the socket and my CPU still didnt fry. Sounds like it was a defective part.

at the beginning I thought is the HF fault, but I found out it's NOT ! I sit the alpha 8045 right with AS3 pasted on both cpu core and alpha. then after I hit the power button for about 10 second I smelled the burn. so It's definitly not the HS fried my xp1900+, it's either the bad chip or my AS 3 mess it up!

BTW, I'm f**king poor and no way to afford another $300. THANKS GOD that I used my AMEX BLUE, i might get some extend warrantee or return protection from my Blue@_@

Just a little advice. When mounting a new heatsink push the clip down almost to where its clipped on the socket A. Instead of clipping it on pull the clip back up(just a little) and listen for a lite smacking sound(hard to explain). If you hear that sound then it means your heatsink is getting contact with the compound and core. Although this prob won't work for the new Alpha.

I heard Artic Silver III is still somewhat conductive. If you spilled it on to some bridges, there's your culprit.

unless you're bathing your chip with AS2/3, you're not gonna spill enough over the side, and have enough to cover the distance to the bridges.....

wrong mounting of 8045.

have you removed the motherboard and checked the mounting, that is really the only way to check it? I mount my MC462 before it goes in da box (duh, you have to, same for the 8045), then look with back lighting to make sure a nice FLAT attachment has been achieved. as far as the AS!! or !!!, you can clean it off with a bit of gasoline real well.

you were lucky to get 10 seconds.

anyway, regarding the RMA factor for wrong installations and customer's returns, we ALL pay for it in some fashion or another, think about it.

Hello

Do any of you guys know of a web site where one can find instructions on how to properly install a heat sink/fan on the CPU/motherboard? I will be building my first PC in the near future and I would like to avoid these issues. Thank you.

Mul there really ain't none I don't think that would help. Heatsinks are one of the easiest things to install. Make sure you use just enough compound(not to much not to little). Also if you want to make things easier buy something with a good clip on it that doesnt require and screw driver. Also make sure your put the ram in last because on most mobos it is in the way and makes it easier to install the heatsink.

If want to make things simple just apply just compound to cover the CPU core. Then clip the heatsink on then take it back off. Look on the bottom of the heatsink and if there ain't compound on it from the core then you know something ain't right. If there is then you know the core is getting contact then put the heatsink back on like you did before. Don't forget to buy a copper shim to prevent cracking the core. I use one myself and won't put another heatsink on without one.
