My Xbox 360 Elite DVD drive is having problems

I went out and bought Star Ocean 4 today and when I got home to play it, my Xbox was having issues reading the disc. I popped it in a few times and it finally read it. I proceeded to install it to my HDD and I got a disc read error.

I tried the 2nd/3rd Disc and those won't even read. I popped in some of my other games which I have already installed and it was iffy reading those discs.

Next, I tried installing another game that I had and I got it to read but it would not install, same disc read error as SO4.

I already put in a repair request for MS as I'm under warranty, but just wondering if this was a common problem with possibly a common solution I could do which would save me the time of not having my xbox while it's in repair.

DVD drive errors are not uncommon, but there really isn't anything you can do except send it in to Microsoft.

I see. So I take it if I tried opening up my xbox, I will void my warranty?

What is the typical turn around time for repairs? I remember people saying it used to take 2-3 weeks...has it gotten any better now?

Depends, MS gives you two options. They send you a prepaid label to your email and you package it up or they send you a prepaid box which can take a few days and you throw your console in. When I sent a RROD in I chose them send me a prepaid label and me package myself because I knew it would take longer. Got mine back within a week and a half after shipping.

So if you wait on the box from them you will be looking at 2-3 weeks.

Just an FYI, but there's a good possibility that you won't receive your actual Xbox 360, but rather a random refurbished model with a new drive. It'll be the equivalent model, of course, but it probably won't be the one you sent in...in case that makes any difference to you.

I don't doubt that, but that seems unlikely to me. Why would they give me another unit when all that needs to be replaced is a DVD drive?

Yeah, it sucks that they give you a different one. Bugs me because sometimes my 360 isnt on the network and some stuff, like RB downloads, have the license tied to the console. You can still play the songs but only when connected to live. If I move the HD to another 360 that I downloaded the songs from originally it will play them without being on live. Right now I have 3 360s and one HD and depending on which 360 I downloaded stuff to it may or may not play the songs offline. it is a PITA.

So let's say I get a different unit. Since I will still be using my original HDD (since they tell you to remove that first), will it be as easy as plugging it in and everything will be back or close to what I used to have? (gamer pic/themes/system settings/downloads/etc)

Note that if you received your new Xbox 360 as the result of a refurbishment or repair, the licenses have already been transferred as part of the repair process, and you do not need to use the license transfer tool, but you may need to download the content again. Kinda sucks that I bet I could open up my xbox and clean out the lens and stuff and have it working but that would void my warranty.

Since I have it under warranty, I might as well send it in, but the 2-3 week turn around time sucks.

That and/or adjusting the laser POT (don't overdo it!). Worked beautifully for my out-of-warranty launch X360 and lasted about a whole year until I replaced the drive (swapped out the old PCB to a brand new Samsung MS28).

hey wondering if anyone knows how to fix my problem,, my xbox elite is saying every game i put in is a DvD and well i changed the disc drive thinking that was the problem but it still isnt working properly JW if anyone has any ideas what i can do to fix it.

Well, got my xbox back today. It was rather fast. Only took 2 business (4 real days due to weekend) days to get my packing box/shipping label sent to me, then another week to ship it back to me. I guess it helped that the repair center was in Mesquite, TX and I'm in Austin.

I did a different unit back and they even put a notice in the box saying it was a new unit and all registration/administrative stuff was already taken care of. They even gave me a 1 month xbox live subscription card as an apology, though I'm sure they do that to everyone.

Put my HD back in, turned it on, made a few setting adjustments and everything was back to normal!

Very pleased overall with the service.
