so last night i was working my ass off on some compcos (doesnt matter what it is) that needed to go out this morning at 9. so it's midnight and i am working, and the fvcking power in the entire building goes out. so i figure whatever, i will just wake up early get in at 8, work on the last set so the principal can look at it when he gets in. low and behold, i can't access the fvcking server where the files are saved! i called IT, they were like yeah... no ETA, so just hang on.

So now I have lost an hour and half of sleep (very crucial in my profession), and sitting here, twiddling my thumb, and converting O2 to CO2. whiskey tango foxtrot!

Power outages can cause a whole sh!t load of problems. Don't be so quick to blame your IT dept.

Bwhahaha... So let me get this straight, the power goes out and since you cannot get to your files which were on a server you say that your company needs to get new IT? I'm sorry, but that's kinda like saying that you should get a new janitor because the toilet in the restroom overflooded and you had to resort to taking a Sh!t in your pants instead.

It's funny, they call IT for everything. I swear whenever the fire alarm goes off, people call IT and ask if they should evacuate. WTF? Why the hell are you calling us? And people always complain afterwards that we didn't answer the phone when we evacuated the building. People must think we're robots resistant to fire or something. End users are funny. Some of ya'll may have masters degrees and Phd's but when it comes to common sense and logic, you are absolutely clueless.

I'm in charge of IT at my company and we get called for anything and everything. Apparently working in IT makes me a carpenter, electrician, the fire department and of course the keeper of the internet with a master switch that turns it off on certain people

yeah, i know the feeling...

"Can you see what's up with my cell phone?"
"This light keeps coming on in my car, any idea how to fix it?"
"My wireless router at home isn't working right, any ideas?"
"Why won't my PDA get service in the mountains of West Virginia?"
"I've heard of a sharpie but haven't been trained on how to use it." (yes, the marker...)

all serious questions I've been asked

Two words: LOCKED OUT

How hard is it to remember a password? Everyone complains that they have to remember 3 passwords and how can they EVER be expected to remember that many. Well, I have about 10 ... one for each of the systems where users forget their damn passwords.

IT was not called because of the power outage. IT was called because the server he needed access to was not up.

Reading comprehension FTW!

Although I'm loathe to agree (even a little) with 3cho, if that was a scheduled outage, as often happens in NYC office buildings, IT should know about it, alert users, and take action to make sure servers go down and come up properly.

If unscheduled, UPSes and power management software should take the server down safely, providing little to no problems when it is started up again...now a dead/dying UPS battery or flaky power management software (APC, I'm looking at you) could cause all sorts of problems, as mentioned. There's always the possibility of a random hardware failure as well...

Of course, all this depends on what sort of organization it is and what sort of service should be expected...on-site IT staff or consultants, multiple redundant servers or not, etc. Of course, since 3cho acts like such a hotshot all the time, I'm assuming he's a very important figure at a big firm and all this stuff should be taken care of!

A power outage is a likely cause for a downed server. Computer Science FTW!

well i would have thought IT would know to bring the server back up 2-3 hours after the outage.
