the pcmcia network card and modem are not viable options since I'm in safe mode. Will I be able to transfer files via a eep parallel cable in safe mode?

Yes you can. Here's what I'd do:

- Get a parallel-to-parallel cable (sometimes called a laplink cable, go figure), and connect it to both computers

- Get the Norton Commander for DOS: http://powerjoe.tripod.com/nc.zip (263KB)
- Make a bootable diskette, open nc.zip into it
- Boot from that diskette on the laptop, type "nc"
- On your other computer, open nc.zip, and run "nc" as well
- On both computers: F9, Left (or Right - doesn't matter), Link, choose "LPT1"
- Choose "master" on one computer and "slave" on the other
- Choose link on both (doesn't have to be at the exact same time)

Now on the master computer you should have one pane of it, and another of the slave computer. Just select what you want (Ins or gray *), and F5 to copy.

If you have an Iomega external zip drive the job is easy.

Put DOS "guest.exe" on your laptop. You can than use the Zip drive to transfer files.

Or copy Win95 CD to Zip Disk and you can use the Zip drive to reintsall Windows and get out of Safe mode. Maybe fix your PCMCIA problem as well.

You can always transfer file/files via floppy drive.

Could try disconnecting your CDROM under Setting Tab in Device Manager, when in Safe Mode. Then reboot to Windows if possible.

thx for the help guys but I mix and matched some drivers so that I could finally boot normally. I have a lot of exclamation marks in device manager but everything works fine with these hacked drivers. Now lets hope my win2k install is a lot kinder. thx again for the info I know I will be using them in the future. :)
