My WD hard drives keep having problems!

I have two WD harddrives both i got OEM. One is a 7200rpm 40Gig Cavier that already hosed windows XP with corupt files. I even have a Quantum fireball 15Gb 5400rpm that's never had a problem for 3yrs and going.

The other is a 7200rpm 80Gig WD "SE" drive that chkdsk scans about 60% of boot ups that makes a ton of noise. I still can't figure it out? I'm never buying WD again but what other HD company has the best quality and able to work for at least a few years?

Heat issues perhaps? Does your case have adequate cooling? I too had a 4gig WD crap out on me about 5 years ago and went Maxtor, but I went to the 80gigse (like you) and its working fine and much quieter than prevoius incarnations.

Contact WD for your warranty - the SE drives have a 3 year warranty and you should NOT have to buy a new hard drive.

Good luck! 🙂

Thanks, should i send the drive back to WD or the pc store i bought it from??? And the 40GWD + and 15Gb Quantum are kinda sandwidched together. I'll stick in a fan by my hd's tonight. i nvr even thought about heat + hard drives.

If WD doesn't take care of it i'm buying maxtor 🙂

I have RMA'ed more Western Digital drives than all others combined. That may mean the drives are more popular, or I just have gotten more client machines with WD drives than any other. I have never sent a Seagate or Maxtor back. I currently am running a Maxtor in my main machine and I am very pleased.

You usually need to send the drive back to WD for warranty service if you bought OEM. Go to WD and punch in your serial number and generate an online RMA. Good Luck!

I just had a Seagate burn up on me last week. The one they sent as a repacement is noisy as hell.
So any hardrive can fail. That's why they are all going to a 1year warrenty.
I have 2 IBM 30gigers going strong after 3 years and a 12000WD SE going strong after a year.
You can't judge hardrives by luck, Maxtor, WD,IBM, and Seagate all have had high return rates at one time or another.

I think it's funny how many of these WD drives have gone bad, but IBM is the one with the tarnished reputation, and my 60 GXP and 120 GXP have been the coolest, quietest-running hard drives I have had to date.
