1984 Volvo Pic 3

Pics I took today (Saturday):

I actually took quite a few more, but it was more for my information and they're pretty much redundant here.

-----------------------------

Now my family is carless. :|

My 1984 Volvo is now a pile of poo.

My wife was taking my son to the doctor, driving down a major 4 lane street, when a teenaged girl cut across the street right in front of her. My wife slammed on the brakes, but still hit the other car. Volvo's totalled, fenders bent into the tires, dumping coolant, shattered windshield, etc.

I can't afford to replace it (and the Fiero doesn't count. 2-seaters don't work for a family of 4). Liability only so no insurance paid rentals or anything.

My wife called me from the accident. The worst part is that I can't be there. I have the baby and the baby seat is in the Volvo. :|

Arrrggghhh... So frustrating!!!! :|:|:|

EDIT Sorry, I should have mentioned that wife and son are fine. Volvos rock. Wife is feeling some shoulder pain from the seatbelt but that's it. That's the first thing I asked her, but didn't think about it now since they're fine...

EDIT #2
Got more info on how this happened. My wife swerved when she hit the brakes. So she hit the other car at an angle. All the force of the collision was at the passenger side front corner. The other car will probably be totalled by her insurance, but it was drivable. I asked my wife what kind of car it was but she's clueless. She doesn't know anything about cars.

One policeman came. He refused to take a report because there were no "visible" injuries, but acknowledged that my wife was NOT at fault. The other driver is still trying to say it was my wife's fault. :|

My wife just dropped a big bomb on me. We have no insurance. After her truck got repo'd she let the insurance lapse on both vehicles (on the same policy). :| California's wierd about that... There's a chance the accident may automatically be my wife's fault just because she was driving uninsured. :|:| I need to do some research. She was stupid and told the cop that she had the insurance form somewhere. Sigh. Just digging a deeper hole. :(

The car is going to be towed to my in-law's. I'll get pics tomorrow and a chance to inspect the car myself.

EDIT #3
Car's at the in-law's. Father in law is supposed to take pics and e-mail them to me. Waiting...

Wife and son are home. They're fine, but my wife's shoulder really hurts. Massages and love on the way.

The other car was a late 90's Eclipse :)Q). Apparently it was REALLY jacked up. It made it around the corner then she parked and called a tow truck. My wife heard the call while she was in her tow truck. ;)

Will post pics as soon as I get them.

EDIT #4
Added pics.

My father-in-law sucks at taking pics. But these are the ones he sent me. I'm going to take my own pics after work tonight.

Rad mount is pushed back enough so the fan is cutting into the rad. It appears to also be shifted to one side. A car this old isn't worth having a shop repair, so it will be up to me to determine whether to deal with it or not.

Definitely need: fender, rad, head light bezels (both), headlight, bumper, bumper trim, spoiler, turn signal, grill.
Possibly need: Rad mount, fram alignment, tire.

:(

EDIT #5
Just went over my bills. Because we're moving in 2 weeks, and I already paid deposits and such, I have ZERO $$. Seriously. :(

EDIT #6
Took it apart... see the Saturday pics. Engine's fine. No coolant loss. It's ready to go. I don't know what my wife thought was coolant. I'll be able to just replace the entire light unit, straighten some metal and the bumper enough so it's not catching on the tire and it allows the hood to close properly, and it will be driveable again. Then I can start replacing stuff a bit at a time. Whew!

Totalled a 84 Volvo? That's possible?

What was this teenage girl driving, an H1? F-350? Excursion? Land Rover? Or was it an econobox and she is now dead?

Hope you got the Cop's info when he said it was the Other Person's fault so you can use his testimony. But other than that, you don't need insurance. THe other chick needs the insurance since it was her fault. Now if she doesn't have insurance, then you're screwed.

You should be contacting the Other Person's insurance company and filing a claim with them to get your money back. In the meantime, I guess you could rent a car or borrow a friend's or something...

You do need the police report, since once they find you have no insurance, the other person's insurance will set their lawyers onto you, and well, good luck.

I know that when I was in a 50/50 accident (50% my fault, 50% other) and he didn't have insurance, I just smiled because I knew he was fvcked. At one point, I guess the guy was so frustrated with my insurance that he tried calling me. I told him to deal with my insurance company and stop harassing me, since I pay my insurance company money to handle him.

Again, good luck.

Mmmm.......

The damage does not look that extensive.......

But if you do not have the tools (and how many of us really have the tools needed for that kind of work?) it is on PITA repair. :(

Asthetics aside (you do not really need the front ground effects piece do you? :p) what you need is a frame straightening, this might be avoidable - but best to look into it all the same, and the radiator remounted (There is a small possibility the the radiator will still work, even after being "cut into" by the fan.). Well, that and the lights of course.

After that, the car will look "ghetto," but should still be servicable.

The real problem is, if you can not do the work yourself, or know of someone who is willing to take it easy on you, you are going to be finacially raped on this deal.

Good luck to you......

Everything is cake labor-wise except for the frame. I'm going to have to dig in myself before I make any decisions.

As far as looking "ghetto"... :| I spent my life driving crappy ugly cars. I finally get a car that I made look good and it gets wrecked. :(

I went driving around the other person's address hoping to find the car so I could get a picture. No such luck. :( It probably really did go to the shop.
