My volume fluctuates randomly

It happens in games, in various media players, in everything really - but only sometimes. It just doubles in volume for a few seconds seemingly at random. This is recent. I've had the board for about 6 months.

I suspected hardware at first - a loose connection or something - but I gave the amp a good shake last time it happened and nothing changed. All the external connections are good.

I might reinstall the drivers and see if that helps, but since they've always been the same and this is a recent problem, I'm pretty sure it won't help.

Anyone seen anyhting like this before?

Realtek audio on a Gigabyte board.

I have the same problem. I have a Gigabyte P35-DS3P MB but I'm not sure about the Realtek audio device. Here's the info I get from msinfo32.exe in Vista

Name Realtek High Definition Audio
Manufacturer Realtek
Status OK
PNP Device ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0885&SUBSYS_1458A002&REV_1001\4&17451BA4&0&0201
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\rtkvhda.sys (6.0.1.5764, 2.15 MB (2,256,976 bytes), 12/27/2008 10:20 PM)

I'm currently trying out headphones to see if I get the same result. Could possibly be my Cambrige soundworks system. It's getting a little old.
