My very pleasant experience with the 'Geek Squad' today

So today I go to BestBuy, ready to put down 30 bux for a ram install on my laptop. I know, I'm a douche for having to do this, but I already broke two keys on my laptop trying to get the keyboard pushed out. So, I'm ready to spend it, no biggie. (Can I still keep my geek card?)

So, I go there, talk to the guy about how it sucks that I have to pay for this, and we're just talking. I pay for the work to be done. He opens it up in front of me, inspects it. First of all, fixes ONE key for me, because I have the little metal piece that goes under the key. (This made me super happy.) Then, starts poking around the keyboard, and loosening it, looking around for managers all the while. Loosens it without any tools, and says "No try to move it back and install the RAM." I do so, and was like "Great, I paid you guys for nothing." He was like "No, go around and get a refund. I didn't even touch your laptop."

And then he said "And now you have your pride back."

Is sonz working at BestBuy now?
 
I used to hook people up with free labor if it was simple all the time because the labor rates at our Mom and Pop shop were quite a bit. Obviously if I am going to work an hour, I will charge you the hourly labor rate, but for 5 mins, come on, it's all good.

One day a really nice mother came in with her kids laptop and a SODIMM. Said that the other shop in town wanted to charge her $50 for install and that she only had $30, but would be able to pay it back on Friday. It was a small town and everybody knew each other.

I told her I would do it for a sandwich from Uncle Mels, which was right across the street. I installed her SODIMM and fired up memtest while she got me that sandwich. In the end, I felt good and got a free lunch.

50 bucks wouldn't have gone in my pocket anyways and it was a minute-job, there are some really caring, nice computer techs out there. Your buddy at Best Buy is one of them.
 
Long story short, I ended up testing a guy's HD, and it was bad. He bought it from the store I work at, but it had a manufacturer warranty. I pulled it out and put it in an anti-static bag for him.

Didn't charge him anything, and 10 mins later he came back with a breakfest special from a restaurant down the street 😀
