Hi All. I recently upgraded my system from what you see in the Sig below (paired with an HD 6950 unlocked) to a GTX 670. Then today I built an Ivy Bridge system. I wanted to give a little rundown of the gaming performance difference I experienced both with the GPU upgrade and then with a total system overhaul. I hope someone finds it interesting and perhaps useful.

First the specs. The Rig in my sig is brand new. I replaced the following.

Abit IP35-Pro @ 448Mhz FSB
Thermalright Ultra-120
Q9550 @ 3.8Ghz
8GB G.Skill PC-6400 @ DDR2-896
EVGA GTX 670 FTW @ 1230/6804
Lite-On HBS212 BD-R
2x 128GB Crucial M4 SSD
WD 300GB Velociraptor
Corsair HX1000 PSU
Soundblaster X-FI w/ Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1

Below are a few benchmarks in various games as well as 3dmark. I realize 3dmark can vary widely from run to run but I use it as a guideline. All games are 16xAF 4xAA 1920x1200 except crysis 2 with AA turned off, but I did run with DX11 and High Resolution textures. Batman was run with Physx off

3DMark 11 Performance Preset
Q9550 w/6950 = 5246
Q9550 w/GTX 670 = 7627
Ivy Bridge = 9825

3DMark Vantage
Q9550 w/6950 = 19178
Q9950 w/GTX 670 = 30714
Ivy Bridge = 33332

Dirt3
Q9550 w/6950 = Min: 45.17 Avg: 54.88
Q9550 w/GTX 670 = Min: 55.75 Avg: 75.56
Ivy Bridge: Min: 88.56 Avg: 107.84

Crysis built in benchmarks
Q9550 w/6950 = cpu: 36.05 gpu: 33.78
Q9550 w/GTX 670 = cpu: 48.83 gpu: 46.87
Ivy Bridge = cpu: 56.83 gpu: 56.41

Crysis 2 Adrenaline Benchmark Central Park
Q9550 w/6950 = min: 16.2 avg: 32.6
Q9550 w/ GTX 670 = min: 25.2 avg: 58.7
Ivy Bridge = min: 39.2 avg: 68.6

Batman Arkham City
Q9550 w/6950 = min: 4 avg: 59 Max: 81
Q9550 w/GTX 670 = min: 19 avg: 83 max: 119
Ivy Bridge = min:32 avg: 105 max: 141

Farcry 2 Ranch Small
Q9550 w/6950 = min: 69.83 avg: 87.24 max: 123.19
Q9550 w/GTX 670 = min: 74.89 avg: 106.76 max: 167.30
Ivy Bridge = min: 105.40 avg: 174.57 max: 246.55

As a side note I did not find anything unplayable except Crysis 2 with DX11 and high resolution textures with the 6950. Once I moved to the 670 it was a lot better, even on the Q9550.

Obviously it's not worth it if you only look at games you've already played.

The point is he's gonna be able to play UPCOMING games at higher settings. ;)

Lol...games like Crysis 3, stuff running UE4 when those start coming out. I can't think of any specific titles, but there will be something.

Thanks for the benchmarking. My 4Ghz i7 920 & 670 FTW combo is close to your Q9550 rig. Just a few hundred MHz off ~ 600Mhz so this is somewhat inline with where I'm at, and useful with making upgrade decisions. I think I can hang on till the next mainstream platform comes out: Haswell or Skylake.

Thanks, Cheers
