I second that motion. Is their an online site that does this? Or is it state by state?

One source:
Check your local classified adds for estate auctions.

Estate auctions are great if you understand what going to happen and what's actually being sold. Many times the"estate" is really a combination of the estate and goods the auctioneer brings from his own barn/auction house. They tend to do this for a few reasons: Estate auctions tend to be the MOST EXPENSIVE auctions to attend meaning the prices tend to be higher for auctioned goods vs. auctions at local auction barns/houses.

Auctioneers LOVE estate auctions because it just pumps up their seller's fees, which are typically 20-25% of the item's final selling price. (The seller's fee is what the auctioneer charges the sellers of the goods to sell his/her items for him/her. The fee is taken off the top of the final bid price. So, if an item sells for $100, the auctioneer takes $25 and the seller receives $75. This is in addition to the typical buyer's premium that the purchaser is charges, typically 10%.....so if you win an item for $100, you pay $110 + tax.)

Another section of the paper to find auctions is in the LEGAL section of the classifieds...........a part of the classifieds most people overlook. I find a LOT of bankruptcy/storage unit selloffs in there.......most people will look in the classifieds in the Aucitons section but never look in the legals section, and miss some good stuff that way.

If you've got the time, I'd love to hear more about this.... Just checked the local legal notices and saw only one thing that looks like an auction:
NOTICE Notice is hereby given that on 10/23/04, after 9:00 a.m. at blahblah Mini-Storage will sell at Public Sale by competitive bidding, the personal property heretofore stored with the undersigned by: Space Number: C-19 {some guy's information and a list of stuff was here} Space Number: {another guy's information and a list of stuff was here}

Any ideas how these types of things work?

Thanks!

Pointers would be great. This sounds kind of interesting and fun. I should check it out.

They say he has the lobes for business. :p

I just learned that ferengi means evil one in some cultures... So does RossMan have horns, too? Or is he just evil in the ways he gets deals.

Hmmmmmmmm..............didn't realize the interest in auctions and auctioning. But I guess I shouldn't be too surprised considering some of the Ferengis around.......and that's not meant as a putdown, just an observation about many who subscribe to the buy-low/sell high philosophy, which I subscribe to, too.

If there's honestly this much interest, I'll write up my "Guide to not getting too screwed at auctions" either late tonight or tomorrow evening. It'll probably be in Word format but I'll need someone to host the copy....it'll be a little long. Over 5 years of experience in auctions and auctioning has given me a bit of information............got a local auctioneer who's pushing me to get my license, but at over $2500 for the classes and testing, I'm still toying with it.

If you want, and there's enough serious interest, I'll do this...........just let me know.

I'd at least take a gander at it. I'd have to see if I can find any local ones for it to be of much use though. heh.

Serious interest, and I'll volunteer to host it! I'm interested in knowing the differences between, say, a bankruptcy auction like you spoke of earlier, a "storage unit" sale, an estate sale, etc. Also, if there's any good books on the subject, I'd love some recommendations. Not looking to make a fortune, but it sounds like a fun way to spend a weekend every now and then!

Thanks,
-Brett.
