My uncle needs music in his store - what to suggest?

My uncle has opened up a mini Wal-Mart type store that has a lot of stuff in it. He just asked me to make a few cds for him to play in his store. Something light that is appropriate for the store. I don't know where to begin?

Beethoven might be a bit too cheesy for a store? Right?

What else?

Try to cater to his target audience, which I assume would mean easy listening, soft jazz, soft rock, etc.

walk around in some stores and get an idea. the music is always light though, so much so that I never notice it, so I can't even remember what stores use it.

So it sounds like you are looking for pirated music to play in a commercial setting???

Perhaps look into something like XM and play one of the stations on it.

Be careful, if you play any music that's covered under copyright your uncle is liable for licensing fees.

ASCAP and BMI have people who go around looking for places like that.

Thanks guys. So if I download music off the internet and give him the cds, he may get in trouble? But the chances of an actual person in the industry walking in that store is pretty slim.

So actually buying it makes more sense?

As for the music, anyone have some specific music?

why not just find a decent easy-listening radio station? Problem solved.

Well, downloading off the internet is illegal to begin with (unless of course it's something like iTunes). What people are getting at, is that in order to use Copyrighted music in a commercial setting, you need to get a specific license.

Also, my vote goes for some Bubba Sparxxx. The old people really love him 😛.

Just pay the $30 a month that Sirius/XM charge for their commercial use subscriptions.

The copyright laws are *really* quirky when it comes to pumping music into a commerical venue. DMX/Musak used to have a stranglehold on the market. The satellite radio subscriptions are MUCH more cost effective and much easier to implement than either of those.

He gets in trouble either way. You have to buy licensing rights to broadcast the songs. You're better off with like satellite muzak or a radio station.

Whatever you do, DON'T play a local commercial radio station. I loathe listening to radio commercials in stores.

True. The FBI occasionally goes into places to see if they are playing music without a liscense. I learned that in my accounting classes. A lot of FBI stuff really has to do with financial crimes than stuff that involves breaking into places with guns blazing. For example, the check forgery in Catch-Me-if-you-can

They have employees who go around and make sure places that play music have licenses. Doesn't matter if you're playing the radio, or playing CDs. Don't look at it as "what are the chances someone in the music business would come into the store". They have employees whose job it is to check licenses. That's what they do - go in to store after store verifying them.

QFT

You can buy a business account for XM. Starbucks does it and the station they play is "Hear Music," I believe.
