My TSX was stolen...

Yesterday I stepped out of my house to go to work only to find that my car was missing. I knew that I had parked legally, my tags were up-to-date, and that I had locked the car, so I called the police to report the car stolen. An officer came by and took my info, ran my plates/VIN/etc. Nothing came up. He said it was likely towed (since there was no broken glass) and stripped for parts in some out-of-the-way lot.

I've been racking my brain since then in hopes of coming up with a scenario in which my car was towed legitimately. The only thing I could think of was that I hadn't gotten emissions inspection recently - maybe I never received notification and my emissions were out-of-date. I called the MVA to check out this theory and I was correct - my car was due in last September and my registration had been cancelled/voided in October, all without me receiving notification. To make things even more fun, the MVA did not know if my car could be/had been towed because of this.

I started calling around Baltimore City impound lots and found that one did have my car. Now I'm lucky enough to get a ride out to the ghetto and pay hundreds of dollars to get my car back.

Anyone been in/heard of a situation like this? Thank god that my car wasn't stolen, but I'm almost more pissed now that I know what happened. I know it's a longshot, but I'd like to go after the MVA/city/responsible party for the costs associated with this ordeal (towing fees and late fees that the f*ckers are sure to try to pin on me). Fat chance, eh? A gov't agency shouldn't be allowed to revoke your registration without notice, let alone steal your car in the middle of the night without notice. The icing on the cake is that the police either don't have access or don't care to access the database of invalid registrations and towed cars.

Update

Apparently I jumped to an incorrect conclusion yesterday. Although the MVA did indeed cancel my registration without notice and my car was in the city impound lot, they weren't the reason it appeared there. Turns out that my car WAS stolen. A cop found it, called it in because the plates were "hot", and the city towed it to the impound for $115. I'd have never learned that my car was recovered unless I called the impound lot. Pretty f*cked up. Anyway, I picked it up this morning to find that my amp, line driver, speakers, subwoofer, floor mats, wheel lock, glasses, CD's, personal papers, etc, etc had all been stolen. Probably $3,000 worth of property, nothing of which is covered by car insurance. Gotta see if homeowners covers it now.

The thieves were nice enough to leave a pocket knife in the backseat of the car. I don't suppose the cops could be bothered to pull fingerprints from it, though.

Jesus man, walking up to an empty spot where your car is has to be one of the worst feelings. I'm glad I don't live in one of these emission nazi states.

sorry to hear that. makes my car incident yesterday seem trivial -- my driver's side was hit with a drive-by donut, splattered all over the rear panel all the way to the side mirror. It was one of those cream filled ones; i didn't want to taste it to find out which in particular because we were having breakfast at work and didn't want to get full.

they tracked you down and towed your car over a lapsed emissions inspection? Cancelling your registration should have sufficed.

I doubt it was towed for that reason. Call the tow company and find out who requested the towing of your car. They have to document the reason they towed your car in case of disputes.

So they happened to check to see if your vehicle was registered while conducting their normal routine street meter checks?

I can't believe they tow your car for that.

Make my city's alternate side parking rules seem tolerable.

the only explaination i can come up with at the moment is that the MVA knew that they had cancelled my registration and sent the towing company to my residence specifically for my car.

They don't tow car for failing emmision. You got unlucky and got you car towed because scum tow truck driver need to make a quick buck. There is nothing you could do either.

pretty much what i did when my car disappeared out of my old apartment complex. the office said they didnt have it towed, the towing company said they didnt tow it but neighbors saw one of his trucks tow it out of the complex. found a private lot of the owners, went and saw my car sitting there. called the cops, identified the car and they still did nothing. finally got the owner of the tow company on the phone with police, they said the paperwork was still being processed, and it was towed as being abandoned. the police rolled over and told me to pay the fees. i even had a letter from the complex management stating they didnt request it to be towed, i had made a deal with them to let me keep it in the lot while i was rebuilding it. when i went back to get my car and pay their extortion fees, they said the car was stolen off their lot and filed a police report for a stolen vehicle. i got screwed bad. hes still in business, i check on him once in a while. one day ill find my retribution.

That just doesnt seem right to me. First, I dont think having an unregistered car will get it towed. Second, I don't think the MVA has the resources to go after every car that isnt registered.

I dont think you should rule out the possibilty that you were scammed. Towing companys are evil and shady from my personal experiences. Consider this; a towing company comes and tows your car. What are your options? You have none except to pay their fees to get your car back. I would call the towing company or pay them a visit in person and have them explain why your car was towed.

i lived in an apartment that did. if you had an expired inspection sticker they would tow you (because your car wasn't legally drivable).

wow, that's rough

the "tow company" in my situation, though, is the Department of Transportation for the City of Baltimore. They've already scammed me out of enough money via insanely high property taxes. If they towed my car for no reason...

I'm betting the police did nothing to help you either right?

I'm really impressed that you were 6 months overdue on your emissions test, but you still found a way to blame this on someone else. You need a notice that it's overdue? Isn't the sticker on your windshield with the expiration date suitable notice?

Edit:
It is illegal to park an unregistered car on the street in Maryland:
http://mlis.state.md.us/cgi-win/web_statutes.exe?gtr&13-402
(or in an apartment or condominium complex parking lot)

So I guess that is why they're allowed to tow it.

i still remember how i felt being chased off his lot by him and 2 of his friends wielding sticks and crowbars. a bit more than towing his car is deserved. but, now i have 3 kids and a reason not to do anything. hes no longer in the tow business tho, so thats a good thing. oddly he still has plenty of action with all those cars coming and going off his lots.
