Ok, so here is the deal. My town has been growing a lot in the last about 5 years, so the school's are getting pretty full. About 1 year and a half ago, a referendum was put up to vote on a tax hike to fund an expansion. There were two parts, first, was the hike for the building, and second for the teachers and equipment to put in it. Long story short, the hike for the building was approved, and the hike for the staff was defeated. Hmm. Well so earlier this year they began the expansion of my high school, and the referendum went up for vote again last year to try and get the funding for the staff. Again, it was defeated. Now, in 4 days it will be voted upon again. You may think I want it to be approved, being a student of the school that it is for... but quite the contrary, I am very opposed to it. Here is why... (this is the part that makes me furious):
- The Superintendant will recieve a $100,000 a year raise. When he was told at a board meeting that if he instead put that money toward the school district, the entire town would be behind him, he responded saying, "No, I wan't my bonus " *smirk*. He currently makes about $120,000 a year and does little more thawhine about how we don't have enough money.
- When deciding which contractor to go with for the project, the school board based their decision on "presentations" given by the contractors, and then made up their minds by "which one looked the best". Not one of the school board members is an engineer qualified to make an intelligent decision. When a 20 year engineer working as a teacher for the district volunteered to help, they literally fought against him all the way and eventually drove him out.
- The "Pride and Joy" of the new expansion to the high school is a new auditorium. Fine, right? Actually, it will cost roughly $450 a SQUARE FOOT for a 9,000 square foot auditorium, which is SMALLER than our existing auditorium, and has 200 MORE seats.
- The construction, which began a few months ago, is already $750,000 over budget due to incompetant decisions made by the school board.
- The Superintendant stated at a board meeting, that if the referendum didn't pass, he would "Fire teachers...so that the parents will feel it be sorry".
These are only a few things on the long list. Being 17, I cannot vote, which fills me with rage. Also, our school newspaper had a "Different Opinions" section today about the referendum, and I KNOW several people wrote very intelligent articles. Of course, the only opinions included were that of the well known Pro-Referendum members of the school. I think I am going to make up sone "A Vote Yes is a vote for HITLER" signs and plaster the lawns with them. God...makes so mad!
