My tires are filled with nitrogen now.

I bought a set of tires from Costco last night, and after waiting over 90 minutes, I didn't look at them. I just wanted to go home. So today I get up to get a haircut, and to pickup the latest Batman DVD. I go out to my car, and see these green things on each wheel. I look closer, and see that its the caps on the valves.

I'm like WTF!! These hideous things must go, and after getting my cut, I head back to Costco. When I get there, I go straight to the tire bay, really pissed. I must have been pretty loud, because 2 guys come running over. I say what's the deal with the neon green caps? I want black ones now!!!! One of them runs off to find some, and the other guy says they're for safety. I'm like safety? Safety from what? He then says so someone working on your car doesn't put air in your tires. You have nitrogen in your tires.

I'm like whaatt?!? He says yeah, it better than air because they stay inflated, and don't go down. Ohhh I say, then I better keep the green ones then. The other guy gives me the black caps anyway, and I go on my way to Walmart.

Now someone please tell me, when did they start doing this with cars?

I have personally have never heard of this and can't help but wonder if they were pulling your chain.

Don't remember but nitrogen is also used in Air Plane tires so you should feel special now.

they started a while ago, but truthfully, it's pretty worthless. it's really a way to make more money since they usually charge you for it. for cars, it really does nothing and most places charge something like $2 to $5 fro a fill up so...

its a bonus, and yes its supposedly better. good enough to justify the extra cost most places charge? probably not. but in ur case it was "free" so don't complain.

i have had teh nitrogen thing for a long time.. it works great. I have a feeling that everytime my tire blew itw as because i mixed gas station air with nitrogen, so now i am careful.. i get it checked at costco.

Once I was told what they were for I was fine with it. It would of been nice if they would have told me about it last night though.

does this mean I can not go to a gas station and fill it myself? Will I have to go to Costco (or anyother place for nitrogen) everytime?

So because you mixed 80% nitrogen with 100% nitrogen you've has MULTIPLE tire blowouts? I'd say that theory makes you eligible for a mental facility if anything.

Yeah, I was pissed because I thought they were trying to pull a fast one on me. I'm funny like that. If you would have done the same, you would have known better than to add air to your tire.

ATTENTION EVERYONE :

Why not fill tires with Helium, that way your car will be lighter and that will definetly increase car effeciency plus it's an inert gas so it's safer than nitrogen , right ?

Mixing AIR and nitrogen will do nothing. Nitrogen is an inerart gas. If there was any meaning full leakage of non nitrogen component in air then with in a few months tires would be filled with nitrogen anyways. The only advantage now is when your tire catches on fire it can no longer use the air inside of it to burn.

A tire filled with helium will go flat much quicker than air.

Fill them with carbon dioxide.
