My thoughts on the x1900xt vs my 512 nvidia so far.....

they score around the same 3dmark05 with the x1900xtx beating it out by 300 points.

The ati card is loud.....i can hear the fans spin up during gameplay whereas i could never hear the 512 fan at all.

I didnt think the fan noise would get to me but dam.......the x1900xtx gets hot and the fans kick up more than i would like to hear. I overclocked my x1900xtx only to put it back to stock settings. Fans are to much.

Any else think the fan is bothersome? I have to admit......Nvidia really has the cooling solution nailed down.

Yeah, the nvidia coolers are super silent. I got one buddy with a 7800GTX KO and another with 7800GTX stock cooler and both are very quiet when compared to my x1800xt.

After coming from an Arctic Silenced x800xt pe, the x1800xt seemed quite loud but you'll adapt in a couple of days. If not, I believe they are coming out with a new aftermarket cooler you might want to look into:

Whoa, that is one gigantic cooler. Looks awesome.

To OP: If you're not satisfied with your x1900xt, send it this way ;)

Yeah, you can afford to put a nice premium no-compromise cooler on cards that you're selling for $750+

The noise is the biggest downside on ATI's cards for me personally. Aftermarket cooling would be an absolute necessity, which would add $30-$40 to the total.

Video card depreciation is *insane*. 10-12 months from now, when G80/R600 come out, you probably won't be able to get more than $300 for these cards.

Weird, the fan on my BFG was more than annoying enough to warrant the purchase of a 3rd party cooler.

Come on, I think it's quite obvious that we all know about the 7800GTX 512's shortcomings without it being brought up in every post.......he's making a fair point.

To back his point, the 7800 nvidia cards that I've dealt with ARE quieter than my x1800xt. Since the x1900xt/x have the same exact cooler, I'd expect nothing different.

i will have to buy an aftermarket cooler for my x1900xt for sure.

Im just really impressed with Nvidia 512 cooler. Im sure that their next gen will adopt the same cooling solution. Even overclocked i never heard the fans on the nvidia's 512.

another odd issue......when i got my 30" dell.....i had to buy the x1800xt (couldnt get the Nvidia card to run the resolution of 2560x1600 without bugs)......anyhow.....in WoW i was averaging 30-45 fps.......now with the x1900xt im getting 25-35. Any thoughts?

G70 7800GTX 512MB short coming are in new games ;! if it can don't HDR , SM3.0 + AA at the same time , it fails as future proof investment. games like oblivion , UT2007 and other take real advantage of HDR/SM3 ! and you want to play them with AA :! so investing in a sick a 7800GTX 512 x2 $750 = $1500 :? is it worth it. I don't think the problem will be even solved in G71 unless they change the core dramatically. but wait for the fanboy to go ... its got 32 pipeline.

Im no fanboi of either card maker...i just get whats the best for me is at the moment....and the x1900xtx for my dell 30" works nicely however i have to really strong feeling that the G71 is going to blow people away. Nvidia has made no noise in ATI's launch cuz i really think they are not worried or stressed at all. They are working on something pretty sick i tell ya.

i never said your a fanboy :! what are Nvidia going to make nosie about... wait for G71 in early march :? ... Anyways if think X1900XT are loud. I would really love to see a cooling system on G71 since each 32 pipeline are suppose to be clocked 700MHZ : ?.. Anyways ! What case do you have :?
ATI also has one wild card up there selves for G71 counter attack. they can easily release a card by mid march that could outperform Nvidia G71 :! X1900XT PE anyone :?

All I'm saying is that it's unfair to compare the cooler that ATI is using on its cards to the GTX 512 cooler. It's become obvious that Nvidia never intended for a mainstream card. They always knew it was going to sell for a premium price, therefore they knew they could afford to go all out with a high-cost cooling solution.

lol guys......so defensive are we. The 512GTX cooler is genious and its not some super expensive design.......leadtek used the same cooler on their extreme 256meggtx version. I have no doubts you will see that same cooler on their next cards coming out in march.

I swear......when i had my 512gtx overclocked and running games....i did not hear the fan whine once.

Im typing you this post while playing WoW and i hear the x1900xtx fan spin up here and there.

Not bashing...just stating. I just wished that ATI charged $40 more per card and used a better cooling solution.

ATI cards reminds me of hondas high revving engines where 4bangers can do 9000rpm and the nvidia are like the Hemis with lots of torque. i must be tired lol....i guess my ati sounds like a fixed up honda when its fans rev up.

is there any program to adj 2d/3d fan speeds for ATi cards? I use one to quiet down my 6800Ultra and it has'nt really affected core heat much because I have over-all pretty good case cooling. If I left it stock i'm pretty sure it would bug me some while gamming.

How do you know it's not an expensive cooler design? The only other card it's been used on was those extreme editions and they don't sell them anymore, but when they did they were significantly more expensive than regular GTX cards.

U could try out the new AC accelo cooler. Maybe a zalman?

You shouldve waited for the G71 if you already had a 7800GTX 512mb.

Ever seen a Quadro 4500, smart guy? ;) The cooler was already tried and tested on a workstation card.

And in case you haven't seen it:

WOW, that cooler looks oddly familiar.

Wrong. It was made to cool a card, and do it quietly and efficiently, end of story. Makes no difference what card it's on (and for all intents and purposes, it's simply a modified design of things they've already done).

The heatsink is only expensive now because it isn't a mass manufactured item. If nVdidia were to standardise on it for all higher end cards, it would be made in the millions and costs would plummet accordingly. Economy of scale, supply & demand - its that simple.

Some designs are more costly to make, regardless of whether they are mass produced or not.

Grow up and get water cooling. The highend silence freak demands it these days with 400+ watt computers.
