Even under idle you can hear the whine from the GTX480 compared to GTX580; at load there’s just no comparison. That’s pretty much how they sounded inside my closed case.

Wow, if you guys think the GTX480 in that video is loud, you have no idea what loud is ():). HD6950/6970 @ 70% fan speed or HD4890 at 60% fan speed will blow your ears away. It's not even close. All those cards in Linus' video just sound like they are moving air. Sure, the GTX480 does have an annoying whine in that video. But, try an AMD HD6950/HD4890 card with a fan speed of 60-70% fan speed and see how loud that really is!

Just at 40% fan speed, my MSI HD4890 was louder than my GTX470 was at 75% fan speed.

What do you guys think about adding an aftermarket cooler?

I think I could get a little more out of the card and it would lower temps significantly. Currently at 1.06v at 824 core. Its about 580 stock speed. Would it be worth it to add the cooler and some good thermal grease? What's the limit on the 480 voltage? Card got up to 92c in BFBC2 multiplayer in 3D. 3D really seems to increase temps. Need as much fps as possible for 3D so card is going to need to be pushed.

When does the fan speed go to 70% and how long does it stay there? I don't have 6900s but a 6870, and the fan speed doesn't change at all under load which means it's basically silent. (granted it's not a stock version but ASUS DirectCU) But compared to my old 5870 stock, 580 stock is definitely louder. And I think 480 is even louder than 580... ?

read a article that they used 2x 480s for a router to achieve 10Gb/s bi directional routing with them. Just google packetshader.pdf.

Any drop in temps?

Hard to tell really. I don't think so. If there were any I would say about 1c. I wanted it because having one on my 580 saved it from a ram stick falling directly on the back. Just piece of mind that there is a layer of protection. Also keeps my grubby fingers from touching the pcb and just looks sexy;)
