My thoughts on the Antec Super Lan Boy

Well as the topic states, I just completed my new system that is housed in the Antec Super LanBoy case. My specs are as follows:

Athlon 3000 (running @ 9x250 at the moment)
1 gig SuperTalent ram (2-3-3-7 @2.6V)
Epox EP-9NDA3J MB
Nec 3520A DVD burner
Maxtor 160 gig AtA 133 (staples special)
ATI 9800 PRO AIW @ XT speeds (holdover until the 800xl is ready)
Antec Super Lanboy (of course)
Antec 480 trublue PS

My goal when I first decided to upgrade from my aging o/ced XP system was to find a case that was quiet and still had great airflow. My old case housed 5 80mm fans along with 2 80mm fans in the Thermaltake 480 Silent PS I was running. I was using a mix of Vantec Stealth and the Enermax temp controlled fans, and trust me they were anything but silent. I was shopping for a case that house at least 2 120mm fans that would provide great airflow and still be quiet enough to leave the computer on 24x7(it resides in my bedroom), and NO Door!!. I looked into the CoolerMaster line and everyone that I liked seemed to only have a 80mm intake fan. I finally decided to settle on the Antec P160 as it seemed to meet all of my needs, however the price seemed to be quite high with the lack of a PS being included. The Lanboy offered a much cheaper route however I really didnt like the look of the case and the fact that it had a door on it didnt exactly make me jump for joy. I happened to stop into CircuitCity on my lunchbreak and I noticed they offered the Lanboy for 129 with a 350 watt Antec PS. I managed to get them to PM the case to BestBuy and paid $96 out the door with tax, so I figured I'd give it a try. The first thing I noticed about the case is that is extremely lightweight as many on here had stated, but that certainly comes with a drawback. The case felt extremely cheap, and seemed to bend and flex quite a bit. I swapped the included 350 PS out for my new Antec 480 and proceded to get everything installed. The included I/O shield wouldnt work with my Epox MB thanks to the Optical Output, so I swapped it for the included I/O that came with my MB. I installed my CPU and Ram and proceeded to install the Epox into the case. There was barely enough room for the MB to clear the HD cages at the front of case. I had to install the board at a 45+degree angle in order for it to clear the cages, and even then almost dropped the MB into the case due to lack of space for my hands. I simply cannot grasp why Antec did not include a removeable MB tray, as this would make it job so much easier. I proceeded to finish installing the rest of my gear into the case, and had to do some creative wiring do to the NEC burner almost touching the outputs of the Antec PS. The harddrive mouting system is the best thing I have ever used in over 10 years of building custom systems, and I think Antec should be praised for it. I finished everything up and promptly booted the system up, only to hear the noise, err lack thereof from the included fans. I wasn't even sure the system was running save for the power LED and the noise from the Maxtor formatting itself. The case is easily a full 3-6dB quieter then my last system. To end a long story, I am happy with the case overall, its very quiet and keeps the temps in my system much lower then I expected. The little plastic door seems very cheap, however as long as you are careful I think it will last for quite a while. My review seems to be a little mixed, and I don't want to bash the case, but Antec certainly took the idea of a lightweight case to the extreme. I would gladly trade a few extra pounds for a chasis that doesn't feel like its going to bend everytime you pick it up. I dont plan on transporting the case very often, but I am surprised that any hardcore lan gamer wouldnt be worried about the case twisting over time. If the space issues and lightweight cheap feeling don't bother you, I would highly recommend the case to anyone that wouldnt be carrying it around very often. I didnt post this in hopes of starting a flame war, it's just my opinion.

Thanks, I'm also considering the LanBoy for my first build. Though I'm upset that no FireWire ports are included, my iPod just got stolen, so it's not that big a deal. Would you reccomend this case for a first-time builder?

Slash, as I stated in the OP, it is a very nice case, however I would highly recommend extra caution when installing the MB into the case. If you take your time, I'm sure it won't be a problem. If get the verison I did and use the included 350 PS it might be a little easier as it is a good bit smaller then the 480 watt Antec I swapped it for. I really did want the Antec P160, but the extra 70-80 price difference wasn't really an option. I think the LanBoy is one of the better cost vs performance deals out there.

Another  for the SLB. I'm really impressed with it, and the sucker is going to stay cool and quiet in the summer too, with its' excellent airflow......

Personally I did not have issues with lack of space when installing. I did wish for a bigger case when I redid the AS 5 on my CPU, but other than that the size was great.

If you ever go to a lan party you will appreciate that "light and cheap" feel as hauling it around is soooo easy. This case is the best I have owned yet and I look forward to picking up a P180 for my next build so I can stick with the Antec quality.

I have had the superlanboy for a while and expressed the same thoughts as the OP. Too cramped, too cheap feeling. However, it is light and light aluminum bends easily. I didnt like the door, thus I removed it. 😀

The case was too cramped, thus i removed the HDD bay rivots and screws and am suspending my HDD by bungee cord. The fan holes made too much turbulence, So I cut them out. THe fans were too noisy, so I swapped them. So, what I have in the end is a really gutted SuperLanboy. Was it worth it? I think im happy with it so far. I paid about 70$ for it so, for a 70$ case its decent.

If you're going to lan parties, you have bigger problems than the weight of your case. 😉

Lol, thats the same thing my wife says.... strange... 😉

It's an easy enough case to work with. If you like the SLB's form factor, but, don't care for it's light weight, consider the Antec Sonota or Antec 3700BQE. Another good choice is the Antec SLK3000B. This case doesn't come with power supply but lists for $60. I found the wimpy power supplies that typically come in these Antec cases to be too small and so would replace them with something like an Antec Neo Power 480 or True 480.

I love the case personally, the light weight is GREAT. I had a Antec Proview 1000 and i swear that case had to be 50 lbs. I got a damn work out carrying it into any LANs. The Lan Boy is like a dream come true compaired to that big ass thing.

Great info on the Lanboy. Its making me reconsider that as a choice for my case upgrade. Does anyone know of a case w/window, removeable mobo tray, 120MM fans, decent quality, but not as cramped? I have an almost server-size tower right now and the thing easily weighs 40-50lbs loaded up :Q
The removeable mobo tray really breaks it for me w/the Lanboy. I wouldn't mind cramped if it had that. Any suggestions all? Thanks!

P160 is a very nice case. Just make sure if you buy one you order an extra 120mm fan for the front. I also thought you could buy the P160 with the window for just a few extra bucks .... cant remember wher I saw that though.

If you find that link, drop me a line 😉
All I've seen is the P160 by itself and the SP160W for like $25. I might be taking my tax refund and getting something better than by ginormous beige 6 year old monster 😀

Yes it is a bit pricey, but cases with removeable MB trays are simply not that cheap. If you are not going to be swapping the MB alot, there is practically no need for the removeable tray. I use the Super Lanboy and like it alot. A little tight but manageable. It is super light with excellent airflow. Best $40 I ever spent.....

Here is one place $150 though ... I'll keep looking.....

This is probably the best deal ..... CASE Window

i love my super lanboy. I chose it for its light weight. Great airflow. The rear exhaust fan is a bit loud under 12v. I mod it to 5v and now it's very quiet. I don't find its space tight maybe becuase I'm used to SFF cases, and also I use SATA devices and no FDD. Only thing I don't like is the door. It's too tight. I much prefer slide-down door or no door at all. Also I just have to be extra carefull not to bend the side panels when i take them out. Font intake fan is great as it cools my 10k Raptor HDD well.

I also like my Super LANBoy. In fact, I bought a "spare" one for $40 AR. Sure, a bit cramped, but after I put together my original one last Summer, haven't had to mess with it other than once, to swap out an optical drive. I removed the front plastic "waffle" grill and now have an "atomic" finger guard. I'm considering removing the door since I don't like them, but my drive doesn't match so I've lived with it. 😱

For being a "stock" case, I think it is reasonably cheap, quiet and has decent airflow. My system certainly runs quieter and cooler than many of my friends' systems, and is overclocked more (2.53@3.33GHz).

It also doesn't seem too flimsy to me, as long as the sides are screwed on.
