my thoughts on driving on the LEFT hand side of the road

i was watching the discovery channel and the caterpillar 797s. they mentioned that they had recently switched to driving on the LEFT hand side of the road for a couple of reasons: 1) the ability to see the side of the road, and 2) in the case of a head-to-head accident, the drivers would be on the opposite side of the vehicle.

granted, it would be kind of hard to re-educate yourself to drive on the other side, but that seems like a really good idea. especially the head-on collision bit.

what do you think?

Presumably you mean driver on the left hand side of the car too and not like the system we use it Britain, if so wouldn't this just make overtaking a lot more dangerous?

no, not really. i mean, you can pass on BOTH sides (at least i do) when driving a left hand car on a right hand road, so why wouldn't you be able to do it on the other side?

I meant dangerous when overtaking on a single carriageway where there are cars coming the other way, I always thought that you sat on the opposite site to which you drove to get a better view of anything coming the other way.

and that is why it won't ever happen, we already have problems as it is with your "average" driver, you think introducing them to a whole new system will decrese that, very unlikely

danny~!

The driver has to be close to the center of the road so that he can pass other cars easily, as just mentioned.

My personal take on it is that the correct side of the road is the right side. Most people are right-handed and thus this allows the right hand to do shifting.

you'd keep the shifter on the right side. the only thing that would change is the side of the road that you're driving on. personally, i don't care which side i pass cars on. i can pass people on both sides effortlessly.

I agree with your first paragraph. However, I've been driving both sides of the road and shifting with left hand is easier for me. I'm right-handed btw.

I guess that Make sense... the driver don't get killed but his wife/son/daughter/mother/friend gets crushed. I guess that is a good idea.

😉
