What does it mean when the system clock loses time while the computer is on? i.e. I look at the clock and it's correct and hours later I look at it again and it is 20mins to an hour behind.

It could be several things:
1) Computer have the world's cheapest digital clock built in. Manufacturers save money by using terrible clocks.
2) Programs can take control of the computer's speed. They manipulate the frequency to make their program run at an optimal speed. Unfortunately the cheap clock doesn't know it and ends up losing time.
3) Viruses can do it.
4) Some programs are linked to clocks on other computers. Your computer may be set up to link to a computer with an incorrect time. On the other hand, you can set it to link up to a computer with the correct time as well. This way it will automatically reset to the correct time whenever you connect to the internet.
5) It could be some combination of the above.

it could also be a problem with your battery - when they get low they start losing time.. try going to dos and type 'time' in the command line. if the time is still off what it should be, then replace your battery on the mobo.. make sure ya flash your bios cause i'm pretty sure it'll wipe it out when you take the battery out

Yah, just change your cmos battery and see if that helps.

No need to mess with flashing the bios. You should expect to have to go back into the bios and change
any settings that you want to be different from the default settings though. The battery is just there to keep the settings and
time when the computer is off. So taking out just resets it to shipping state. If your unfamiliar with bios settings you may want
to write down the current settings before taking out the battery.

the pc doesn't rely on battery power when the system is up & running so I very much doubt it's the battery at fault here!

If the time loss is most serious when the system is on, check the Device Manager for conflicts or disabled devices. (The clock is interrupt-driven, and conflicting devices or software can impair its operation.)
The RTC(real time clock chip) may be faulty. If so, usually aint worth the $ to rplace it. If it really bothers you, replace the mobo.............
Using a time synchronizing program may alleviate some of the trouble........
