Just recently installed all my components into a new case and the machine wont post past the ASUS Graphic POST screen. Says hit Del for setup, but it will not enter it. after about 3-5 minutes, the graphical post screen will turn into grey and black vertical lines. I tested known good video cards, so its either my CPU or my Motherboard. Have also tried laying it all out on a piece of cardboard to avoid short outs.

Help!!!

PS: I never have killed a CPU before, but logically speaking, wouldnt the CPU be the next step after the motherboard has posted?
 
Check all your molex connections.

Edit: Also check IDE / SATA connections and make sure the RAM is seated. If it POSTs and then freezes, it's getting stuck on your drive detection.
 
is it a 1GB stick of RAM or 2x 512, if it's 2x 512 try pulling one out and see if works then if not swap it with te one you pulled out.

Also make sure your IDE jumpers are set properly, because if for some reason the BIOS first read device is an optical drive and there are two drives set to master on one channel it wouldn't work right.

Also make sure your PC speaker is hooked up properly, so you can hear the mobo beep codes.
 
It's 2x512mb and I've tried each stick in a number of the slots. but I might have the damn optical drives mixed, I'll check. thanks.
 
at the time of first boot I might have had the drives mixed up, but now the motherboard is just sitting on a piece of cardboard w/ the video carrd, 1 stick of memory, cpu/heatsink

but that was a good idea, i wouldnt have thought of it

wouldn't the next part of the computer to function be the CPU?

im going to plug my speakers into the onboard sound and see if its yelling at me
 
normally the mobo beeps through it's internal speaker, not via the sound card. good luck. i still would have guessed it was a short.

well it seems to be just giving me a regular 1 beep and then booting.. i'll try to listen more carefully.. the new aerocool case i have has this temp monitor that starts freaking out when i turn my comp on because i dont have a fan plugged into case1/video1 and it thinks the fans died... :-

i need to find a site that shows off booting habits of a dead processor
 
It's more likely to be the motherboard rather than the CPU if you are able to power up, get something on the screen, and get a post beep..have you tried re-seating the CPU? It's extremely unlikely to be a bad CPU if you are seeing something on the screen, even if it's locking up at the BIOS screen, you are getting something.
 
well it's locking up at my motherboard's default post screen which is a big graphical asus logo and model name.. then it just idles there forever..

it wont do ANYTHING else.. you still think its the mobo?

If you are booting with the bare minimums(1 stick of ram, cpu/heatsink and fan, video card) and it's locking up after the post beep, it's most likely the motherboard. If the CPU was dead, you wouldn't post at all, and wouldn't get anything displaying on the screen.

Also, are you sure your keyboard is working? If you reset the CMOS, but couldn't get in it to fix settings, it may be sitting there waiting for you to do that..my abit board will halt after reseting the CMOS, waiting for you to press one key to just continue on, or another to enter bios and change settings..but if the keyboard isn't working..it would look like it's just sitting there, just something else to consider...

Have you tried re-seating the CPU yet?
 
Hi, Mother Board can't do anything by itself. The processor is the only intellegence there. If you get anywhere the CPU is running. Not necessarily 100%. Try one stick of mem then the other. Reset the BIOS using the jumper. Or if you can't find the jumper pull the battery. Both must be done with the AC power off. Put it back after a couple of hours. Luck, Jim
 
I'll reseat the CPU, and my keyboard has been working to my knowledge. It's a logitech g15, but i'll try another one just incase. thanks a lot.
 
you might want to try using a different keyboard and mouse aswell, as it might not respond to the USB input deviecs yet.

Also double check your power rails, your Harddrive cables, and that the heatsink/fan is properly seated and the its CPU fan is properly plugged in.

 
I always build with a ps/2 keyboard and mouse, make sure everything is working properly, THEN install my cordless mouse and usb keyboard.

You mentioned something about the system complaining about a missing fan? Is your bios intelligent enough NOT to boot if it thinks the system's going to burn up? (Not sure any bios is that smart, but I haven't used a new bios in a couple years.)
 
hmm... no my case has a LCD fan monitor built into it and it was hard to hear system beeps because that thing freaks out every time i boot up. but its not associated with the motherboard at all.. im going to reseat my cpu/fan and try a diff keyboard.. i'll post back when im done
