No I mean that for $3k, I'm doubting that you can get a system that sounds like his. A setup that sounds like you're in front of a stage, not a setup that feels like you're in your living room listening to speakers.
That's what you meant by "clean transparent sound" And again, my answer is that you CAN get a stereo that does that for $3000.

You said DIY speakers for $1500-2000. So amp/preamp and cdplayer for $1000? I didn't think so.
And by no means am I claiming you need to spend $15k to get a sound like his.

no doubt in the world that i could get a setup for under 3 grand. including wires, amp, (preamp if i feel the need), crossovers, and speakers. are you talking surround, or 2.1? or what?

It's pretty easy to get carried away and spend gobs of money on something like this. I've already tallied up what my dream HT would cost...I'm already at $26K and that's just for the speakers, pre-amp, and amps. I haven't even looked at DVD players, projectors, or anything else. The hard part is saving up for it :( Hopefully one day I'll have it.

Sonic Frontiers? I'm not quite sure if they still sell new stuff as I thought they went under a few years back when all the small tube companies did...they're now known as Anthem (the one related to Paradigm speakers) and are purely solid state.

Regardless of new/used, still a nice setup...but aside from processing and amplification, what speakers is he running?

And $15K isn't that bad...my system's worth around 10K-11K and it isn't even close to being finished yet. Another batch of upgrades should come in about...4-5 months? :p

what is his setup? is it surround or 2.1? that really will tell what i can do. i could probably get 80-90% of his sound with a DIY setup.

holy sh!t for 2.0 i could do it NO problem. speakers would cost 2 grand, and the rest i would get used to toal the final cost.

uh, and btw: there probably is a subwoofer in that system, its just in the same towers, there is no other way to replicate the lows without a sub...

yes there is. Just big woofers in the speakers or a full range panel.

Uh then it's not called a subwoofer. A big woofer can easily replicate the lows. Especially when his woofer is 12".
Also no one gives a crap if you can get 80% of the sound for $3000.

wow, does your neighbor heat his house by burning dollar bills?

unless he's in the audio business or a professional musician, he seriously needs to reprioritize his spending habits.

wtf.... im confused. a woofer, 12" is most likely a sub woofer, used to replicate the sub frequency sounds, aka those under 80Hz. he also probably has a midrange, a mid woofer, and either horns, or tweeters.
With the midwoofer playing from about 80-500 or so hz, the midrange playing 500-3000, and horns playing 3000 on up.

i dont get how you would not call that a subwoofer.

It plays the lower midranges too. Subwoofers are dedicated to playing low frequencies.

lol I agree. his entire family's vehicles doesn't even cost as much as his speakers. He has a $6k BMW bike, his wife drives an 88 maxima, his son drives a 93 accord.

Getting 80%-90% is the easy part. You could probably do it for even less than $3K. Most systems can do that...it's the upper 15%-20% that's difficult to obtain. The hard part is getting a system that can do 98%+ of the more expensive system.

Its just symantecs. You don't normally call a woofer in a speaker a subwoofer - subwoofers are dedicated to the lowest frequencies (normally below 100 hz)
