It's that time of the year again - Newegg gets a large chunk of my hard earned $$$.

Last year I went budget with a trusty Barton 2500+, Gigabyte KT600, and 512 MB PC3200. This year I wanted something more top of the line.

Here's my final rig for this year's upgrade:

A64 3400+ (socket 754)
ABIT KV8 Pro
1 GB PC3200
XFX 5900 XT (475/850)
160 GB WD with 8MB cache

The order has been placed and I'll let everyone know how it turns out next week!

I got Mushkin PC3200 CAS 2.5. I have heard that the prices of socket 939 chips and motherboards won't merit the Sky high prices. I am also the type of person that upgrades chip and motherboard at the same time, always have and will. Longevity of socket 754 doesn't bother me. I also wanted a processor with the 1 MB of cache - that helps relieve some of the bottleneck of single channel memory.

From early benchmarks, it looks like s754 3400+ is very close in performance to the s939 3500+, but the 3500+ will be more expensive.

I also got tired of waiting. :D

Good for you! Seems like the is always something 'better' around the corner.

Should be a nice upgrade.

The 3700+ is supposed to be over $800 as well. At least the socket 754 still has some life in it.

I agree that waiting for 949 is pointless. After 939, there will be PCI Express, then DDR2, then BTX, then... By the time a new much faster, resonably priced CPUs are out, motherboard would need to be upgraded as well.

Yeah, but all those other technologies are well in the future, 939 is just days away.

Yeah, given the prices of the 939 3500, I think the 3400 is a better choice right now.

Maybe things will be different in 6 months.
