So as I'm sure most of you know I went to Aruba this past summer. My trip was supposed to be from June 16th - June 20th. But it was actually June 17th - June 21st. Here is why.

I was at the airport going through security with my bookbag of a bunch of carryon stuff. The alarm goes off so they put it through again. It goes through again and the alarm goes off so they tell me they have to search my bag. I say sure no problem. So they search it and a friggin switchblade is in there. I had no clue it was in there. I cleaned that bookbag in and out before I went on my trip, except the 1 little pocket on it. It was my junk bookbag that i had from college. I even had a ticket stub in there from the first UMD game at the Comcast center, which was I think in '01. And most of all, it was a movie prop switch blade, that was pretty much a busted switch blade.

I told them "oh i didnt know that was in there, just toss it." and they told me to hang on. next thing I know, 3 police officers are walking over, and 1 is pulling her cuffs. she tells me to turn around and tells me I'm under arrest. Of course I tried to explain myself and just shut up. I looked at my GF and I felt so bad cause she was teary eyed as I was walking away. I didn't know what to do for her, for the first time I was completely helpless to her.

So I end up being locked in a holding cell for 5 hours, freezing cold, trying to sleep on a metal bed with no mattress. I hadn't slept all night cause I stayed up to get a ride to the airport at 3:30am since our flight was at 6:30am. All I could think about was my GF.

I was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, which is a felony charge. apparently in maryland, a switch blade is as bad as a gun. EVEN though it wasn't even a fully functional switch blade that was a movie prop.

Around 10:30am I finally leave and they transfer me to this other place where I talked to the police commissioner. I explained to her the situation, told her I never got in trouble, where I was going, etc. She literally did this pitiful laugh kind of like "oh man you just got caught in the wrong position at the wrong time." i could see it in her eye that she knew I was so innocent and such a good kid. So she lets me go with no bail and I get a ride back to the airport and meet up w/my GF. We end up going to Miami for 1 night then to Aruba from the 17th - 21st.

So when I get back, its attorney time. So I found an attorney whom used to work with the state prosecuting attorney, but now he was a defense attorney. He had a decent price and after he heard the story, he told me I would never see a jail cell or anything. that relieved me. he told me every month he talked to the prosecuting attorney discussing 4-5 cases such as mine, and tries to get it off w/out ever having to go to court, but having some type of punishment or something.

So I hear back from him a few days later after he met with the prosecuting attorney and said that if I did 16 hours community service, all charges would be dropped. But I still would hav to go to court on my court date after I do this, just to get it all said and done with. That date was tomorrow, friday, november 4th.

This past tueday I get a call from him saying to fax the letter saying I finished my service hours to him, and that he was going to see if he could make it so I don't even have to go to court.

I get a call this morning at 11:30am and get the verdict ... all charges are dismissed and i do not have to go to court! I was SSOO relieved. I have this very VERY relieved feeling in me right now. I am just so happy it is over.

So that is my story of my first runin with the law ever. It was stupid STUPID mistake by me to not check EVERY nook and cranny of my bookbag, so yes, I know it was my fault. I still think some discretion should have been used when they arrested me. but they were just doing their job.

Even after I was arrested, and back at the airport, 2 of the cops who were involved in the whole incident (not the arresting officer though) came up to me and talked to me. They felt so sorry for me and realized that while they were just doing their job and I had a switch blade on me, that I was not a bad kid or anything like that. One of them even told me exactly what I should do with the attorney and all that stuff, and that once i explain my situation in court, nothing should happen to me. He also told me about a few good diving spots in Aruba since it was his favorite vacation spot.

I felt so stupid being cuffed and taken off infront of all these parents, children, and my GF especially. it was so humiliating. I ended up spending about $1250 on attorney and this violation fee I had to pay to the airport.

Well I am just very VERY relieved right now to say the most. I definitely learned my lesson to triple check EVERY bad I take on the plane with me next time.

i know man, i know. i scrwed up with that. i knew i had junk in there but i didnt know i had a damn switchblade in there! i had like pencils, little memory cards, shotglasses, etc. my moms boyfriend at the time always had movie props, like stuff from die hard and predator, and gave that to me a LONG time ago, i'm talking years. i don't know how it ended up in my bookbag, but it did.

i was so psyched for this vacation, you dont even understand. i had never been out of the country or anywhere exotic and have wanted to go to a place like that forever.

when i was arrested, i didnt even think i was going to go on a vacation. thank god the hotel and airport let us push everything back one day. i would have been sssooo disappointed if I didn't get to go to aruba.

Glad to see that they can catch switchblades going through. Sometimes I doubt they can catch anything. Tough situation though.

So sorry that happened to you. I thought they just confiscated the stuff and put it in that glass case I see at every airport with the knives, scissors, lighters and all. Glad I took my 35yr-old manicure scissors out of my purse last time I flew. Good you have such a magnanimous view of the whole thing.

They can detect lots of things. Found my multi-tool in my camera bag (has a small blade). I had thought I had put it in the checked luggage. They gave me the choice to check it or leave it. It was HNL outbound and the bag was already headed for the plane, so it got crushed sometime later by the airport authority. That tool was from Restoration Hardware and about the size of a tiny pager in a pocket with headphones, mic cables, attenuators, tapes, and various other metal tidbits. Another airport got my dikes (wire cutters) - I think that was San Antonio.

well if it was just a normal knife, they would have taken it and i woul dhave been on my way.

but in MD, since switch blades are considered as bad as a gun, I was arrested. thats why I think they should use some discretion when arresting in this situation. however, they didn't and I suffered. all in all, they were just doing their jobs.

Yeah, I carry a folding knife with me all the time. When I went on my honeymoon last year, I reminded myself not to bring it, but at 4AM when getting dressed to go to the airport, you are sort of on autopilot and I just threw my knife in my pocket purely by force of habit.

Go to the airport, get into the security line, empty my pockets - knife included - into the bucket along with my book bag, walk through the check point, take my stuff out of the bucket and only as I'm putting my knife in my pocket does my wife say something like "Wait, what are you doing with that in here?" Luckily no one heard her!

I would have liked to have just voluntarily handed it over upon realizing mistake, but knowing that my honesty would likely be "rewarded" by my arrest, missing my flight and cruise departure and fines or worse, I simply tucked the knife into my suitcase.

Good going, TSA...a bunch of dolts.

WTF is this? Under who's authority does a friggin airport have authorization to charge people fines and fees? Does that mean I can go around fining people for pissing me off?

I actually went through airport security with a loaded clip once (this was years before 9/11) in San Diego Intl Airport. The guy stopped me and asked if he could look through my bag and I said sure. I was stunned when he pulled out a magazine for my Colt .45 loaded with 6 rounds of ammo. I explained to him that I sometimes use that bag as a shooting bag and must have forgotten it was in there. I don't think he quite knew what to do so he finally said to me, "well, you can't bring it on the plane with you!" I said that was not my intention and he let my wife pick it up on her way out.

Sucks that you had to go through all that for a simple mistake though.

It was some new thing after 9-11 where if you have a knife or something, the airport can give you a citation. if i didnt pay it off w/in 2 weeks of when I received it, it would have been doubled :(

You came out all right in the endbut it was still a hastle. A while back a senator tried to get on with a gun, he actually still made his flight. Don't tell me he got preferential treatment.

If the authorities hadn't needlessly hassled you, the terrorists would have won.

I feel so much safer now!!

I love all the government apologists on this thread. "Wow, you learned your lesson" etc. etc. Whatever. Terrorists will no longer hijack planes with knives because they would have 80-100 people piling on top of them, not because of some impotent government regulations. All crap like this does is inconvenience law abiding citizens to give them the illusion of security.

i agree, but hey, there wasn't much I could do. i just shut my mouth and got off w/doing only 16 hours of service + 1250$. and yea, it was a huge PITA, the whole thing, for a stupid little mistake that could have been avoided had the arresting officer just used a little discretion ...

but as i said, its all said and done now. im just glad for that.
