my stray dog story...with pics

So earlier on today, I head outside to the car and I see this dog trampling around, I try to call it over to see if it has a collar to no avail, so I go along with my business. Now hours later, the same dog is still walking around the neighborhood, now clearly in pain because it is a frigid day here in upstate NY. I find it on the back steps of some crappy unoccupied apartment around the corner. It's just sitting there shivering and convulsing. So I bring over some food and it chomps down after I back away. The dog is clearly not approachable - I'm not sure if this is because it's a nasty dog or simply the fact that it's irritable due to the fact that it's been in the freezing cold for 5+ hours AT LEAST.

I call animal control, and no one is in. I call up the villiage police and county police, who both pass me along to animal control. Apparently the emergency dog control office is only open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. In looking at the dog, it appears to be a pitbull (possible mix of some kind). I spent an hour or two (on and off) trying to coax it down, but it wasn't going to happen. I just went back outside to check on it, and it was gone.

I'm wondering whether or not the dog will make it through the night - its supposed to be single digits without wind chill....

What kind of dog is this?

Cold weather won't kill a dog. Animals are way tougher than people. Haven't you seen those hairless Greenland Snap Poodles?

That was my initial thought....but in standing next to it...it was shaking so bad it looked as though it was vomiting or convusling at points...

Are you friggin stupid? This is about the most ignorant thing I have ever read. Dogs die ALL THE TIME from cold weather. I live in Maine, during the winter more than a few people have left their dog outside overnight only to wake up and find it dead after a really cold night. That is with a dog house, which is usually insulated. Or, a dog runs away and gets lost in a snowstorm, the next morning the owners find the dog dead under a tree on the lawn. Dogs can simply not live through a night of single digit temperatures unless they are very well protected from the elements.

You beat me to it.

its terrier cross thats for sure.

she looks about 4 or 5 yrs. well taken care of, has had puppies. i dont think it will bite you if you tried to take it home. just dont show fear. animals smell fear. just because shes a pit doesnt mean she'll bite you. i mean thats if you really care about its well being.

i dont belive there is such thing as animal control, thats just a cover up.

The dog looks normal and calm although a little strange. The eyes are almost like from an alien movie although I know that it's just the camera flash.

What, next you're gonna tell me that antifreeze is bad for them?

Looks like it has some english bulldog in it. Either way be a good ATOTer and take care of it until the proper authorities can take care of her.

Rabies? I guess just cold is more likely. It looks well cared for, nice shiny coat. Any luck finding it again?

Well, I think you are correct. I was wrong, I did not look at the dog's face long enough. But the dog is not a bull terrier.

Heinz 57 ( 57 different kinds into one or better known as a mutt. Not that there is anything wrong with that)

It's a pitbull!
It has ears that stand up and they call those type of ears "bat ears".

I raise them.
Most of my dogs have ears like that!
They look funny especially when there ears are long.

That growl from deep in her bowels, beware. She just had pups and she may bite. If she was raised for breeding purposes only, you have a very friendly dog. However, try to find the owner and return her. Be cautious around her though. She looks a little malnurished.

EDIT: I just saw where you said the dog is gone. Maybe it went home. Hopefully. It is good you didn't try to push the dog into coming with you. Thankfully she hasn't, and hopefully she won't, bite anyone. The problem with animal control is they will put this dog down. I hate that they have such a bad rep. They are wonderful dogs when trained properly.
