Until I see a signed affidavit stating the OP didn't hack from the OPs grandmother who also needs a computer science degree, I'm just going to believe he did and call it a day.

OP: either you or someone elso who obtained access to your Steam account cheated in MW2.

Because VAC bans are delayed it might happened months ago.

VAC2 dont make mistakes because it use cheats full signatures to recognize them.

VAC bans based on game engine so in this case only MW2 will be affected.

He must have done *something* to the game code that flagged VAC. Now maybe it really wasn't a hack, but that doesn't matter. Changing game = ban.

FTR...it only bans you from vac protected servers in the specific game you've been banned from. You can still play muliplayer on servers that are not vac secured.

I have never used anything Steam...SP or MP...but this whole concept of No reversals and 100% accuracy seems too perfect...

Is VAC some Neuro-NET processor? a 'learning computer' >-)

Does someone (human) make a judgment or is it all automatic...the system recognizes an anomaly in the system (the matrix) and automatically triggers the ban on the account in XXX seconds...

Is there ever a brief or detailed description of WHY you were banned vs. the 'denied' message

People judge what is a cheat and what is not. This is inputed into the software. If the software recognizes the pattern you are banned. From what I have seen it's accurate in 99.9% of cases.

VAC isn't an algorithm. It's Valve engineers investigating known cheats, dissecting them and how they effect the .exe when they're injected, and then programming VAC to find that particular signature. So somehow the OP's .exe was altered to match that of a .exe that has been injected with a known hack. So the method has no false positives.

It's the biggest plus and the biggest minus of VAC. The good news is that it never bans someone that didn't deserve it. The bad news is that it takes time for the Valve engineers to discover and account for the hack, so someone running a new hack can go crazy on servers for weeks or months before they get dealt with. VAC isn't used as the only anti-hack tool for all games except MW2. Everything else has got something like local admin, votekick, voteban, or Punkbuster going on. So there's a way to deal with hackers immediately and eventually VAC will kick in and bring down the perma-hammer. MW2 only has VAC. So you have to suffer the hackers until VAC kicks in, if ever.

It should also be noted VAC doesn't ban immediately either. You can use a known hack for days, weeks, even months before you're banned. The cheaters, who people love to refer to as hackers (which they deserve no such credit), simply download the hacks from some skill programmer who has chosen to share their work. There will be cheaters who may never get banned, at least from MW2. They could have subtle, homemade cheats and never get detected. Now, with admin support on a dedicated server they could be banned from the server easily.

Steam/Valve is pretty heavy handed when it comes to cheats, even if it's a false positive. I'd be more surprised if they lifted the ban. But good luck :]

Steam requires three positive checks of a cheat, generally this helps prevent "false positives."

Sorry for your loss. Can you still play games from other engines? I believe it only effects games of the same engine at a time.

wrong.

1 detection is enough to be VAC banned - thats because VAC use cheats full signature to recognize it, which prevent "false positives."

I had a guy in my clan get banned from cod4 and cod5 for having a single player hack for Empire Total War that gave him gold. It is entirely possible to get falsely accused for having certain things in your RAM that get flagged by the anticheat. Even Balance refused to lift his ban and he was going as far as asking them if he could get on a plane and come demonstrate what caused his ban.

Why would a cheat for ETW hook the same information as a hack for COD?

The console pops up with pirated and hacked versions of the game. You got banned for a reason and there's nothing we can rightfully do about it. It's unfortunate that you decided to cheat, but you can always purchase another copy and play the game fairly. Remember never to give your password out to anyone, even friends. Even if you don't commit the crime, you are still liable if others do with your credentials.

Did you sit beside this guy each and every time he played? As you put it, he was "a guy in my clan". You only know what he told you. Maybe he would or maybe he wouldn't outright come out and tell you, "Yeah, I cheated all the time...was the greatest thing evar!"

Doesn't Even Balance do Punk Buster and not VAC. Punkbuster most definitely has false positives but VAC certainly does not. 1 = 1 If you have COD_4_HACK.exe running and VAC sees it than its a ban that is all it does.
