My Stance on the installer

The Installer is currently 2 parts. One part VB and one part Script files. The script files were created/modified by Shux and without his help, I would have never gotten this far. The VB part is all mine. We asked for help, none was given. By version 1.0 it will be 100% VB. The seti executable will not be included, but will be downloaded at run-time. Anyhow, I am off topic in my own post. I helped make this installer to help the Seti users. I don't DO Seti, I DO ECCP. If the team wishes to not make it available to all the other teams, I will zip up the source files and support files I have and someone else can finish it.

sorry musta missed your call for help, if you need someone else to finish it due to you not being willing to do it "in team" let me know, I do a bit of VB programming myself.

I use a lot of seti add in's like seti spy, seti watch and seti driver.
The author of those apps give it freely without obligation on the part of the user, I like this and I think it is good for the whole seti community. I am a grateful user.

I am not telling anyone what to do with their intellectual property, as I would chafe if someone did that to me. I feel that if you would like to donate your intellectual property to the whole community that is your business. If it does not contain other peoples code then you should be able to make that decision yourself IMHO. If it does conatain others code then I think you should have an agreement with them. IMHO

Seti is suppose to be a fun hobby, not a Ohhh lookie what we got you can't have it, Nah, Nah!

Not sharing the finished product would be petty...Unless of course that was the programmers choice, then that would be an entirely different story.

Please tell me i didn't join up in a fun race only for it to turn into something petty.

Bot, I am not entirely certain what your position is exactly.

<< If the team wishes to not make it available to all the other teams, I will zip up the source files and support files I have and someone else can finish it. >>

I interpret this as "if the team opposes sharing, then I don't plan to finish it, but I'm not throwing my work away."
Is this thread asking if the team opposes sharing your work?

I think that Bot has every right to his opinion and slamming him for whatever decision he makes is entirely out of line. A lot has happend today concerning the FlexInstaller, I would hope that we can all come to an agreement for the near term and work this out or projects like this are very likley not going to happen again. Bot has given alot of time to this project and anything less than support for him IMHO would be an injustice.

I admit I am a little lost on this, and I hope it was not my thought that came across as slamming someone who has clearly worked this hard. Shux, he has every right and more to his opinion, but I can't tell what it is for sure. Sorry.

I'm sorry, I never have been very good at speaking clearly. All I was saying is if the "TeAm" wants the installer to be for the "TeAm" only, then the "TeAm" can develope it. I won't be so cruel as to erase the work I have already done, but unless it is for the good of the many, instead of the good of the one, I won't be finishing it. I always thought the "TeAm" was bigger than just us.

<< Bot--I salute you, for both your hard work on this thing (FlexInstall) and for your stance on Open Source. >>

I think that keeping this installer inside just the TeAm would be missing the whole point of the project in which we are participating. The aim of the project is to unite together and search for intelligent life outside our solar system. The competition aspect that the stats bring to the table is just a secondary consideration in the grand scheme of things. I think that hoarding a utility designed to help people install Seti(I'm guessing that's what it does???) and contribute to the project is completely against the very essence of what we are hoping to accomplish, and it frankly cheapens all our contributions to science.

Of course, I didn't write the program. So it isn't my place to decide what should be done with it.

Just my opinion, and we know what bodypart those tend to resemble...

Enough rambling, back to having E-Mag make me feel utterly stupid.

Bot,

I think most of the people were concerned with the possible legal ramifications this could mean to you or Shux (at least I know that is the concern I have seen voiced the most). I have no problem with sharing this if you want to, but I really think you should run this by an attorney before you do. I would hate to see another incident where the government or some business decides to make an example out of a TeAm member.

In a perfect world I would say share this bad boy as soon as its ready, but I don't want to do this at any TeAm mates expense.

I don't understand the problem, if you and Shux developed it, then you and Shux can do whatever you want. The poll Shux posted asked for people's opinons, and now you have them; what you choose to do is still your decision. I'm all for science, but personally, I'd try to figure out a way to make some $$ off it if I were you guys (with a substantial discount ot TA members, of course), this is still America, afterall. :)

Ah, Capitalism! :D

Or, using the barter system, you could swap the program for x # of days/weeks running SETI for Team Anandtech. Ooh, that sounds just downright greedy of me.

and I'd better say quick that I'm just kidding, before I start a big discussion over the merits/ethics of it. ;););)

I myself would prefer open source, such as has been followed by other programmers. How many of us have benefited from SETIDRIVER, SETIWATCH, SETISPY, etc..., and how much did we pay them for use of it? Nada. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Zero.

I was just concerned by potential legal issues. :Q

my stance on it is this, we develope it as a tool as an individual tool for individual PC's and to promote the team, if they like it and want the network distribution (A VERY VALUBLE feature) they would be more inticed to join the team to get it, benifiting them and the team.

To echo Shux's comments, an author has the right to do whatever he/she wishes with their work.

In regards to asking for help, I believe we had a few threads going with several people contributing ideas as well as actual scripts. I can't remember a call for assistance going unanswered. The community we have here is strong and full of intelligent people. It just so happens that Shux and you have taken the lead/initiative on this project. And for that we (and soon the entire SETI community) are grateful.

I have a pretty good scripting background and have hacked a few things together in VB. If there is any assistance I can offer, please don't hesitate to ask.

I hope nobody though my above post was slamming bot.... It wasn't, i was agreeing with him, as he has already cleared up with his second post.
