My stainless steel desk... stains?

I have "stainless steel cleaner" that seems to be mostly mineral oil based. Unless I'm not scrubbing hard enough it's not working.

What are the stains from?
oil/grease = acetone
free iron rust = nitric acid

I guess they're just water based, they're from beer and sodas sitting on the bare surface.

Stainless is nto actually stainless. It is just harder to stain.
