My SSD slowing down?

About 1 month ago I bought a Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD. Lately the Windows 7 desktop icons are blank for a couple of seconds and then slowly show the icon pictures over the course of 3 seconds. I read that SSDs slow down when they are almost full and mine is almost full but that should only affect the write speeds, not the read speeds as I read and I assume that it is purely read speeds I'm dealing with when Windows loads, especially loading the icons on the desktop. I only have 25 GB of free space on my SSD out of the total 238 GB capacity and I try to leave no less than 10% of free space on my SSD. Crystal Diskmark shows about 39 MB/s for the random 4k read and 122 MB/s for the random 4k write. So do I have too much data on my SSD for it to perform optimally?

I have been using that software to disable superfetch and auto defrag on my SSD. Those tweaks didn't make a difference. I think that some service that is loading in the background is causing the icons to blank out for a few seconds. The icons show there images then a few seconds later most of them blank out for a few seconds. Or maybe I just have too much data on my SSD?

I just moved some installed games with Steam Mover to my 1TB hard drive and ran Performance Optimization in SM. Now I have 49 GB free on my SSD and it still has the desktop icon blankout issue about 5 seconds after Windows is done loading. I don't think that it was because my SSD was almost full, it's maybe some service in the background that loads up.

The busines of SSD free space has been discussed for at least 2 years in AT. I belong to the Old Hippie club - 20% is great.

My analogy is that of asmall boat in a bay. When the water is calm, you can cruise reasonably fast with little freeboard. But, when it gets rough, eithert you need more freeboard or go slower to keep from swamping.

I just cloned my old SSD over to my 840Pro 256GB and am experiencing problems similar to yours... slow loading of folder contents and pages using IE. ...don't have a solution for it yet.

I have noticed the same thing but I haven't put much thought into it. I have 40gb used out of 120gb so free space isn't the issue. I am now wondering if a MS update is the culprit. I don't really remember when this started as I rarely shut the pc off.

FWIW, I had more problems with a cloned/imaged SSD than installing from scratch. In fact, my old X25-M got pretty messed up after the backup was restored onto it, i.e. drive light got stuck, took forever to detect, etc. Then I managed to secure erase it, and it's been fine working 24/7 for a year or so.
