My Sony MDR-700's are splitting laterally on the right side :(

I've had these headpones for two years and have taken nothing but the most perfect care of them. ALL of the stress that caused this was just caused by the force of the headband trying to press the ears into my head 🙁

fvcking $100 headphones ruined by sh!tty design. 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

stress fracture

I just emailed customer support. Let's see how that goes 🙁

MDR-7502/7506s for the win... Just like the Technics SL-1200, if the design ain't broke, don't fix it!

They wouldnt be broken if you didnt throw them around like a cheap $10 set.

Edit, either that, or you got a ginormous head.

yea same here, their design doesn't instill confidence, sorta ugly really but it hasn't broken on me yet. i popped one side off once too.😛 popped right back on

Just for comparison purposes, here are the results of my recent Sennheiser "under warranty" (repaired/replaced at no cost) repair:
  • 06 February (Mon) - Submitted an RMA request online. Obtained an RMA same day. Shipped to Sennheiser via USPS Priority Mail same day.
  • 09 February (Thu) - Item received by Sennheiser. RMA status updated online.
  • 13 February (Mon) - Repair cost estimate exceeds product cost. New item request sent to warehouse for shipment.
  • 14 February (Tue) - Tracking sent via e-mail. Packaged shipped via UPS Ground on 2/13 (Mon).
  • 16 February (Thu) - Replacement received.
Ten days (eight business days) is excellent turn-around time, including shipment in both directions.

Judging by my past experience with Sony, I highly doubt you can expect the same level of customer service.

Do hope I am wrong, however (for your sake).

Heh, I've had mine for almost 4 years now and I treat them like ass. Still rocking out after all these years!

And I Treat them worse..had to order a new cord once too😱

my MDR-V6's are still going strong after about... 4 years? I've replaced the cushions about once per year though, with the oh-so-soft velour BeyerDynamic covers. 😀

it's pretty easy, they're not glued or anything, you just pull them off gently, starting by going outwards, parallel to the can. i did it the first time by following a walkthrough on one of the audiophile websites, but it's really nothing...

Well I certainly agree that Sony products are generally overpriced crap, but I have to add in that some models are good & some aren't - regardless of manufacturer. For instance, the Sony v6s (NOT THE 600s!!) are built like a tank. Further, the headband of my beloved Sennheiser 280s is shot to hell, the plastic first cracked and then two pieces broke off. This is a known issue experienced by anyone who uses this model extensively. It doesn't mean they're bad headphones or that Sennheiser is a bad company. A little crazy glue and some electrical tape has resulted in an attractive enough fix.

> Above is a link to a picture of my MDR-700's. I am at a complete loss as to why I have stress fractures running up and down the right side of my headphones that aren't even two years old yet. I have taken absolute care to baby these headphones and I don't use them that often. They have never been abused and I challenge you to think of an abuse situation that would cause these kinds of stress fractures.

> I paid a lot of money for these headphones. I'd either like a partial credit so I can buy a different model of Sony, studio type headphones or I'd like to ship these to you and get a replacement. Clearly the design of these headphones is seriously flawed (as I have several friends who also have ruined MDR-700Â?s) and I anticipate these headphones becoming unusable very shortly as this fracture worsens. Unlike them, I have all of the original packaging and receipts as I feared that something like this would develop someday.
