Also I'd suggest jsut getting the 250GB model now.

I agree with this advice. Unless you have another Xbox hard drive handy, it is probably better to just spend the extra $100 and get the model with the 250 GB hard drive.

OP, as others have pointed out, you can't just buy any laptop drive and place it in the Xbox (you can on the PS3, however). What you can do is buy a used Xbox hard drive and then place it in the Xbox Slim Arcade, but honestly, I don't think it is worth the risk of getting a bad drive.

Walmart has the 250 gig + extra wireless controller + choice of game (Madden 11) for $399 or the 4 gig for $299.. IS that a good deal, seems like the normal cost of the items to me.

That's not a good deal at all. You can get a wireless controller on Amazon for $40 and Madden 11 has been on sale for $30 everywhere you look here lately. It was mostly Black Friday sales, but I'd say you could still find it for that price somewhere within the next month.

Best deal is probably the new Holiday special, XBox SLim 250GB, Forza 3, Alan Wake for 299$ in the US, and here in Canada its 250$. This is at Best Buy presently. Those games most likly arnt the bets games. But can be sold. Other then that the Lego bundle looks good.

Alan Wake probably isn't the best kids game but Forza 3 should be just fine, especially if the op's kid likes racing games.

To the op, I agree with the rest of the folks here. Get the model with the 250GB hard drive now so you don't have to worry about it later.

I am a casual gamer but I would recommend the 250g model so you can save your games to the hard drive and save wear and tear on the DVD player and your game discs.
There is a good deal of cursing and bad behavior on XBox Live, but kids probably hear that at school anyway. My friend's second grader loves kicking my butt in COD MW2, but we play private matches so the only talking is between us.
As far as the controller batteries go, I use rechargeable AA's. Since I have a number of digital gizmos that use AA batteries, it's the only way to go.

He already has a wii.

You guy's are overblowing the amount of M-rated games. Yea, there's a lot of them and they're popular, but let's not forget that there's a ton of kid friendly content on Xbox Live Arcade alone.

I'd have to say you're better off paying the extra $100 for the 250gb. If you're going to be downloading any downloadable games at all, you're going to fill up that space quickly. Sure, you can supplement that with a pair of USB sticks. But let's face it, unless you have some large USB sticks lying around, they're not free either.

You say there's a ton of kid friendly games on aracade, back it up. Give me 10 really good games for kids under 10 on aracde ?

on the hard drive issue - no way I'd pay Microsoft for their overpriced hard drives. I take my chances with a used 20 gig that costs me $20. good enough for me.

what kids want issue - little kids want everything they see on tv, and everything they know older kids have. cell phones, bras, motorcycles, beer, Playboy, xbox..

That doesn't mean they will actually enjoy those things. As far as the xbox, before kinect the only little kids who actually enjoy the xbox are the kids of parents who let them play games such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty.

After kinect little kids might like the xbox more, except for fat kids; all the jumping around would be fun.

This post is complete garbage. If you read any of the previous posts, espeically the ones from us with kids that play on a 360, you can see there are A LOT of good KID GAMES that exist for the console.

The arcade catalog is online for all to see and I had no problems finding 10 games that kids under 10 could play and that were rated E. There are 185 arcade games rated E on Live. Here are a few:

1. ABC Fun
2. Snail Story Learning Adventures
3. Flash Cards for Kids (with mini-games)
4. Math Flash
5. Sonic Adventure
6. Sonic 4
7. Pac Man
8. Sonic and Knuckles
9. Sonic 2
10. Sonic 3

Braid
Geometry Wars
Peggle
Puzzle Quest
Uno
(there's a bunch from PopCap Games on there)
Not to mention all the classic arcade games that you can get too.

Those are some quick ideas. There are TONS of kid and family friendly games on arcade. Your posts are ignornant and unhelpful to this thread.

There are 185 rated E games on arcade alone, and I had no problem finding 10 quick ones that were either educational or fun games for kids under 10.

I'm guessing he did a copy/paste.
Do you REALLY think that out of 185 E rated games, there aren't 10 that are good and that kids will love?

Honestly, stop posting in this thread, you're simply not being helpful.

And for the record, yes, if I gave my kids 5 Sonic games, they'd play each one with a shit-eating grin on their face.

And I said those were examples. Pick any classic arcade game (Galaga, Pac Man, etc). Most kids would play 5 Sonic games without a second thought. I don't have time to sort through 185 games to meet some ridiculous standard you're setting. Go look yourself. You asked for 10 and you were given 10.

My brother has a (retail) MAME cabinet in his basement. My 7yr old daughter is IN LOVE with the classics... PacMan, Frogger, Burger Time etc. She could play those forever (and she sucks at 'em).

Hmmmm..... is there Gorf on XBLA? If so, I may have to get unbanned.

You really think those games justify spending $300 on a console ? Most can be played via Steam for a few dollars,

Uno is a lot better card game than a console game.
Geometry Wars ? I'm sure lots of kids are dreaming of playing that Christmas morning. it's a fun game, for about 5 minutes.

btw, I am speaking from experience, not ignorance. Actual experience with families within and without my own, kids, grandkids. And numerous occasions of vidoe game purchases over the past 40 years. Including specific knowledge about the xbox 360 and what games young boys actually end up playing on it. Between grandkids and grand nephews, i know exactly what 6 boys between 8 and 13 enjoy playing on the 360, and what they don't play.

I have an xbox 360. I know how much kids want one, i know what it's like when kids play games on it. I've played games like Viva Pinata with them and know that it is a fairly complicated strategy game despite what it looks like. Some older kids may like it, but younger kids don't like their Pinatas getting eaten.

I've been trying to convince my wife to let me get an arcade cabinet and put it in our bar. No luck so far. 🙁

That's a name I've not heard in a long time. Where did he go?

Not sure, I've not seen him in quite a while.

Splosion Man
Paper Boy
Boom Boom Rocket
Age of Booty
Monkey Island
Trials HD
Worms (and 2)
Aegis Wing
Bomberman
Marble Blast Ultra
Pinball FX2
Banjo Kazooie
Puzzle Quest (and 2)
Crazy Taxi

The list goes on and on...

Just to clarify my psts, I'm not against buying an xbox for kids, in fact i thought I said that the Kinect makes it more attractive for kids.

And I don't mean there aren't kids games that are downloadable. But so far I have found precious few that are both good games and really of interest to kids.

And I don't mean shovelware or games from the 1990s.

That's why I aksed for 10 of them. That wasn't a rhetorical question, i want to know what are the 10 best games for kids 8 to 10.

If ABC games and Sonic games are the 10 bewst, that is even more pathetic than I thought.
