My son is getting a Gamecube for Christmas

My son asked for a Gamecube for Christmas, not really sure why because we have an Xbox. Anyway his grandmother is getting him one. She bought him the holiday pack that includes a game and extra controller. I guess he needs a memory card but I have no idea what size to get. He likes to play RPG's and Yugioh games. Besides a memory card is there anything else I should pick up.

Definitely a memory card. They have multiple sizes; I would get the largest Nintendo-brand one (probably around $30).

Look into a Wavebird wireless controller. Works great and you won't have to worry about tripping over cords.

You might also want to get an s-video or component cable depending on what kind of TV you are connecting it to. If your TV is really old, you may need an RF adapter.

Necessity. My roomates and I have had a Gamecube since they came out.. Smash Brothers has taken about 97% of total time spent playing the Gamecube. The new Mario Kart took the other 2%. And, a few boring games took 1%.

SMASH BROTHERS!!! Once you learn it and get unfrustrated with the controls, it's the best fighting game ever.
 
Try to pick him up some of the Player's Choice games. They should be around $20 so they shouldn't be nearly as hard on the wallet. 🙂 Also, you might also get him a Wavebird wireless controller. They sell for around $30. It's an excellent controller and gets excellent battery life, especially with rechargeables. 🙂 Try to get the 1024 memory card as that should allow more saving that he'll probably ever use.

j/k, i would DEFINITELY recommend a wavebird. i didnt see the big fuss over them until i used it. i wish they had something like that for xbox because i would DEFINITELY buy it. (ie, not a third party controller)
 
Make sure you have a second controller, and some extension cords for them. That or a couple of "Wavebird" wireless controllers.

Memory cards are obvious.

My son (7 yrs. old) likes Super Smash, Mario Cart, Monkey Ball (one of the best "Part Games" and only $10 to $15 in most places), Simpsons hit and run. And if he has a Gameboy SP, get the cable to link that too.
 
A lot of places will be having sales on console games as Christmas nears. The Player's Choice games which are normally $20.00 are only $16.00 if you find a 20% off sale like Fred Meyer's had. I read somewhere that the larger Nintendo brand memory cards had issues due to the compression they used.
 
Wavebird (trust me, it is worth every penny of the $30)

Get the "white" memory card, which is the largest Nintendo offers currently.

As far as games go, I would recommend:

Zelda
Mario Sunshine (available as a player's choice)
Metroid Prime

For RPG's, check out Skies of Arcadia Legends and Baten Kaitos

A new Zelda is on the way that promises to get me back into video gaming...

How old is your son? I would recommend Donkey Konga and an extra set of bongos... it's $80 worth of accessories, but it is the most fun you and your son will have together for at least a month.

So from what I hear I would be better off getting an official Nintendo memory card rather than a cheap one from ebay.

Yes. Nintendo memory cards are not that expensive and are far more reliable than third-party ones.
