My son did something amazingly generous yesterday

He had an early release day from school so he and his friends walked over to a Sonic burgers near the school for lunch. While eating they noticed a homeless guy sitting by himself probably trying to beat the heat (it was in the mid 90s here yesterday) and my son went over to him and gave him $10. They guy thanked him and told him that this would buy him food for the next 3 days.

I asked my son why he gave the guy so much money and he said, "I don't need it and he did need it." I thought that was a very selfless and touching gesture and I just wanted to share that. With all the negativity in the world there is still good in people.

My son just turned 13 years old, he's in the 8th grade.

Panhandlers are a different beast. Always check their immediate surroundings for their belongings. Real homeless people always have their stuff with them, ALWAYS.

Sounds like a really bad investment. Had to invested that $10 into something that made a moderate gain, in 30 or so years he could have the means to actually do something about homelessness rather than pay for a guys next rock to smoke.

It is a Beneteau 37 sailboat. I rented it for 8 hours out of San Diego a couple months ago when my Mom was out visiting. I let my son take the helm for a while and he didn't want to give it up, he is very good crew.

We were down in Florida last week and at this one stoplight was a homeless looking guy with a sign that said Need Help. Someone gave him an apple. Then at night we went through that same intersection and I noticed off to the right at the Walgreens barely 30ft from us was him and some other rough-looking friends having conversation, some smokes and probably a few beers. The light was long and so I continued to watch and the guy handed his female friend a different sign and she made her way over to the middle of our lanes and started her act. Unbelievable if I didn't see it myself.

They make it that much harder for the real homeless.

One guy approached me and said he got out of jail and was hungry.

I was a poor student at the time, and offered to buy him a slice of pizza. He said he wanted cash.

Since I didn't want to see my cash go to drugs, I insisted on the pizza slice or nothing.

He looked across the street at a Cuban restaurant and said he wanted to eat there instead.

I almost told him to go fuck himself, and I just walked away.

So many of these guys are manipulators, that it makes it tough to identify the ones who really need the help.

Another time in a European subway a girl looked like she really needed some cash. When I gave it to her, she walked over to her boyfriend on the other side of the train cab who was totally fried on drugs and gave him the money! Niiiice. I felt like such a sucker!

a few years back there was a somewhat infamous beggar that was always at the same intersection. local talk radio mentioned him and some people called up and said they had offered him jobs and he refused to even consider unless he got a month's pay in advance.

well the panhandler heard about this and called into the program to defend his actions. By saying that he made $30,000/year (back when that was still real money) while working whenever he wanted.

It's a lot better than nothing, I'll grant the OP's son that much and kudos to him for him for doing that (well, less kudos given that the boy very likely did not earn that money nor has he learnt the value of money through having to earn and manage it/pay bills for himself), but it really isn't "amazing" IMO unless there's some extra factor to consider like the kid's relations have tried to brainwash him into thinking that homeless people are worthless or something similar.
