My solution for people in heavy debt with credit cards or mortgages.

LOL @ OP. That is one of stupidest ideas I have heard.

Prison-no chance of paying back debt.
Children-Why should they suffer for their parents mistakes?
CC Companies-They hand those things out (at least used to) like candy and look where that got them.

They should be jailed at a rate of 2 years per $50k in debt, lose the home at auction AND their children or ANY family who lives in the home, would have the debt equally divided among them. They all share in the living of the house, they should all share in the debt. The amount of debt shared among them would be [amount of debt - amount sold at auction = shared debt]

That's my stimulus plan. People in debt piss me off.

1) I'll be damned if I'm going to pay to have people jailed for privated debt obligations.

2) See #1. And if they do stop payment in hopes of getting a bailout, the bailout program should specifically address that and not offer bailouts to people who actually have money to continue paying their mortgage.

3) And who made the loans to the deadbeats in the first place? They hold responsibility too for making loans to people with limited ability to pay.

Anyway, screw the credit card companies when folks can't pay. The credit card companies charge huge interest to reflect the risk of making unsecured loans. Loans going bad is just part of being in that business. There is a reason these are called unsecured loans. The douchebags who default are no worse than the douchebags who made the loans. Also, by the time folks go bankrupt, chances are the credit card companies have already gotten their principal back. They're just trying to get all that interest.
 
I'm all for more stringent bankruptcy and foreclosure laws (if you have any hope of making the payments your application for bankruptcy should be tossed out) but this is absolutely ridiculous. The cost associated with jailing these morons would far outweigh their debt they have and to shift it onto their kids is idiotic. The kids had no control over their parents so they shouldn't bare the responsibility.
