Well i received my Dual Core Opteron 165 last Friday, and have been testing over the weekend. When buying this chip i had high hopes that they would scale high like the single core Opterons, the only thing that worried me was the 9x multi and my boards ability with stable high HTT.

I have pretty much hit stability now, with this chip comfortably at 2.6Ghz at only 1.5v, 9 hours prime stable (or should i say Stress Prime 2004 stable x2). I found that with the improved memory controller i was able to get the full potential from my sticks with timings of 2.5-4-4-7 at a whopping 289Mhz 2.9v :D (now thats what i am talking about !!!), i found with my previous winchester (Week 51), i was only memtest stable with 3-4-3-7 @ 253Mhz, so i am now well happy that i am getting the full potential from my RAM, fro me.

My CPU and RAM is currently speced to the following:

CPU: AMD s939 Opteron 165 @ 2.6Ghz (9 x 289Mhz 1:1) 1.5v - 9 hours prime stable (Blend Test) and 4 hours of small FFT's,
RAM: OCZ Plat Rev 2's @ 289Mhz 2.5-4-4-7 1T - 6 passes of memtest using a boot CD, all tests with no errors

i plan to prime for longer once i have had time to re-install the OS.

My xp90 with 92mm Panaflo, was able to keep the temps down to 32 idle, and 49 Full Load. Bearing in mind that the case was open so i suspect temps to increase when I put the panels back on and put in my desk.

I found i was able to hit 2.4Ghz (aka 4800+) with out voltage increase and was prime stable for about an hour, i stopped priming there because i knew that was not my limit, so i carried on and found that i was able to max it out at 2.85Ghz (9 x 317) at max volts 1.64. This was not stable, however at 2.8Ghz at max volts it was stable for 40 mins which was all i tested it for, as i was never going to stay at max volts with load temps of 55. So after a lot of messing around with dividers mem timings and HT speed, i found a nice stable combination of the above specs. I was actually able to get my ram to boot at 297 Mhz @ 2.5-4-4-7 but this was not memtest stable, failing on test 8 with about 70 errors a pass.

I am yet to re-install the OS as i have not had any stability issues within games or normal use, and i have not had to set the affinity on anything to remedy, the games i tested were Black and White 2, BF2 full games, and the F.E.A,R, AO3 demo, and there was no problems with playing these games at all.

I have however installed the AMD driver along with the MS Hotfix and reg key creation, and also modified the BOOT.INI file, before fully testing so maybe these things have prevented any problems i could have encountered, although i still think i will re-install the OS at a later date, so that it can be nice and fresh.

All in all i am really pleased with the performance of this chip, although I was wishfully hoping for 2.8Ghz fully prime and memtest stable with low?ish volts, arh well this is good enough :D

I have a question what is the average OC with the Toledo cores (None 3800+ X2)?

Here are some pics for you to look at:

Thanks Mark :)

i was kinda hoping for around 2.7 maybe 2.8, as i was thinking that these opterons were going to be wonder chips, but hey i cant complain with 2.6Ghz times 2 :D and also my memory is just amazing now .. really pleased with it.

Those are the 1MB caches? Nice, can't complain about 2x FX-55s. My X2 hits 2.5 on 1.312 vcore though so :p I'm starting to think that my Epox's temp senor is borked though since it still says that its hitting 60C with those vcore after re-applying AS5 and tightening my TT down alot better.

I really don't know what is different than the X2's, but glad to know they do so well. Might try one of those for my next CPU !

Yeah these are 1MB L2 cache cores it?s the Toledo core with a locked 9x multi, i cant believe i got one since they are so scarce or not even out in most places, I ordered from cpucity in the UK and it was the last one in stock out of only two this place has ever had

Nice Vcore on your chip there, have you thought of upping the voltage and going for more, and yeah I cant see your temps being that high there must be a problem with the temps sensor or dodgy BIOS, mine are only 49 load, and probs about 55 once case panels get put back on.

Now the real question. How much did you pay? How much are the 3800+'s in the UK?

yeah thats the thing for 1.8Ghz you might have thought they would be a bit cheaper, for instance i paid £340 delivered

the 3800+ is £280 ish delivered

and the 4400+ is £395 ish delivered

i took a bit of a gamble with this CPU, as there are no current results on the net for this processor, so it was basically just an assumption that these would OC on par with the current single core opterons .. aka pretty damn good.

i am please with what i have .. but for the lower end Toledo 1.8Ghz it is not as cheap as it should be, considering for £60 ish more i could have had a 4400+ which is 400Mhz faster at stock speeds, and is already proven.

Ouch! That's a $600 chip. Prices are a bit steep in the UK...

The EU taxes the crap out of everything. I think its like an 18% VAT for computer components...I paid $385 overnighted for my X2. Might be able to make some $$$ being a middle man shipping crap to people overseas...

Your dual-opteron 165 s939 = "comfortably" o/c'ed @ 2.6ghz $460 USD

2X 3800+ = average o/c ~ 2.7ghz w/good cooling $340 USD

Congrats. You're the first brave sole I've seen to venture out with the dual-opty s939.

But this is disappointing compared to the single core CABNE opty. Although, I bet with good watercooling you would be able to get that 2.85ghz stable. ;)

Ya I had the impression that the average X2 oc was around 2.5.

Actually, by what I've seem over @ xs forums most of the people are getting 2.7ghz or better with their X2.

EDIT: Look... my post wasn't meant to be critical of the OP's o/c. 2.6ghz stable is a good overclock. I'm really thankful RichUK is sharing his experience.

Lets say the average o/c of the X2 3800+ is 2.5ghz. Is the 165 still worth the $120 premium? I concede it might be if it was stable ~ 2.85ghz w/air cooling.

Well, it does have the extra cache, thats worth maybe a 100Mhz. Makes it a bit closer.

I agree. If the opteron was less then it would be a steal! However, you could just BUY a 4200+ or 4400+ X2 for the price of the opty and have better OCing headroom.

Congrats on the OC; however, i was hoping these would do a little better. maybe later on you can try going higher. After all, your mobo, cooling, etc. are all variables when you're trying to find your Max OC, so maybe someone else will have better results.

Can you please post me you A64T settings cause I am testing same cpu and same ram as yours tomorrow, I'd like to have a base for the tccd settings with the 165 (I'm moving from intel to amd...)

Thanks

I hope mine will be as good as yours (same stepping)

meh. not as good a bargain as I though it would be. It has more cache but still...

Thats a great OC especially from 1.8ghz

Very nice! And kudos to you for being brave enough to try out an Opteron dually :)

BTW though, 55C under load is nothing to panic about.

You basically have dual FX-55s :D
