that's right, xp auto detects the new dual core chip, installs the necessery file and then asks you to reboot. Simple as that :)

Well finally got around to overclocking my Opty 165 last night. I got it to 2430 (270*9) before the motherboard started showing reboot problems.... it's the asrock, don't get it ;) I know this chip will go higher since I've primed it at 2475; this mobo just doesn't like to reboot with overclocked settings.... :( 51C load - this is with Zalman 7000A and AS5.

Sometimes dropping the memory frequency helps with booting, you can up it again in windows using A64 tweaker. and which voltage are you running?

I have the same stepping as Rich. Got it up to about 9x190 ~ 2.6 @ 1.45V but I was afraid to volt it any higher. I have the same XP-90 and 92mm high flow Panaflo fan. You think this is my max o/c or should I give it more volts? My load temps are around 38-40C

If you like your CPU and you're planning to keep it for a while - leave it at 1.45V. If you want something to show off I guess you could go a bit higher ;)

I'm aware of the AMD driver and hotfix. But what is this reg key creation and boot.ini modification you speak of? I'm going to by an Opteron 165 soon, so I want to make sure I've got everything just so when I install it.

BTW--The hotfix fixes any need for setting affinities, right?

I find that this is a thorough guide on all the steps needed to take when installing the drivers and properly setting up the hotfix etc.

Thanks RichUK!

PriceGrabber is showing 165s hovering at $300 or so with shipping, and the X2 3800+ at $320 or so.
