Well i received my Dual Core Opteron 165 last Friday, and have been testing over the weekend. When buying this chip i had high hopes that they would scale high like the single core Opterons, the only thing that worried me was the 9x multi and my boards ability with stable high HTT.
I have pretty much hit stability now, with this chip comfortably at 2.6Ghz at only 1.5v, 9 hours prime stable (or should i say Stress Prime 2004 stable x2). I found that with the improved memory controller i was able to get the full potential from my sticks with timings of 2.5-4-4-7 at a whopping 289Mhz 2.9v
(now thats what i am talking about !!!), i found with my previous winchester (Week 51), i was only memtest stable with 3-4-3-7 @ 253Mhz, so i am now well happy that i am getting the full potential from my RAM, fro me.
My CPU and RAM is currently speced to the following:
CPU: AMD s939 Opteron 165 @ 2.6Ghz (9 x 289Mhz 1:1) 1.5v - 9 hours prime stable (Blend Test) and 4 hours of small FFT's,
RAM: OCZ Plat Rev 2's @ 289Mhz 2.5-4-4-7 1T - 6 passes of memtest using a boot CD, all tests with no errors
i plan to prime for longer once i have had time to re-install the OS.
My xp90 with 92mm Panaflo, was able to keep the temps down to 32 idle, and 49 Full Load. Bearing in mind that the case was open so i suspect temps to increase when I put the panels back on and put in my desk.
I found i was able to hit 2.4Ghz (aka 4800+) with out voltage increase and was prime stable for about an hour, i stopped priming there because i knew that was not my limit, so i carried on and found that i was able to max it out at 2.85Ghz (9 x 317) at max volts 1.64. This was not stable, however at 2.8Ghz at max volts it was stable for 40 mins which was all i tested it for, as i was never going to stay at max volts with load temps of 55. So after a lot of messing around with dividers mem timings and HT speed, i found a nice stable combination of the above specs. I was actually able to get my ram to boot at 297 Mhz @ 2.5-4-4-7 but this was not memtest stable, failing on test 8 with about 70 errors a pass.
I am yet to re-install the OS as i have not had any stability issues within games or normal use, and i have not had to set the affinity on anything to remedy, the games i tested were Black and White 2, BF2 full games, and the F.E.A,R, AO3 demo, and there was no problems with playing these games at all.
I have however installed the AMD driver along with the MS Hotfix and reg key creation, and also modified the BOOT.INI file, before fully testing so maybe these things have prevented any problems i could have encountered, although i still think i will re-install the OS at a later date, so that it can be nice and fresh.
All in all i am really pleased with the performance of this chip, although I was wishfully hoping for 2.8Ghz fully prime and memtest stable with low?ish volts, arh well this is good enough
I have a question what is the average OC with the Toledo cores (None 3800+ X2)?
