check in the device manager under the hard disk controllers/ide controllers and check the properties of primary and secondary controllers you should find a tab to enable DMA

GAZZA,
I did as you said and the DMA was set to auto
I ran CDspeed and it won't go over 16X and it tested very good before
LMK if you think of anything that would stop the speed @ 16X

OK one other thing springs to mind seeing as it is XP/Optical drive related and that is probably your ASPI drivers or lack of should I say , get the latest version of them Here at the Adaptec web site

Are you sure you are looking at the correct IDE channel? The only time I see auto-detect where it isn't grayed out is when the channel is empty. Both my lite-on cd-rw and 16x dvd have the auto-detect grayed out and show DMA if available and the DMA transfer mode being used. Also, have you flashed to the latest firmware revision already? I've had a cd-rw go funny on one of my clients and flashing it resolved the problem.

DAPUNISHER,
I'm sorry I should have that in
transfer mode: it is set to DMA if Available
and I think I'll look to flash my Lite-on DVD

OK, but does it actually show the DMA transfer mode E.G. UltraDMA mode2 like mine does? If not then that is probably the cause of the slow down since it would be stuck in PIO4 mode most likely. BTW, I always make my DVD master on the cable and cdrw Slave as they seem to work better that way. Good luck and IHTH
:)

DAPUNISHER,
yes the DVD is running in UltraDMA mode2
I have only 1 drive on each IDE with my Drives as masters
and my HDD's are on an ATA133 PCI Card

sorry again for my lack of info in my reply
