She will be taking a student tour around europe in about a month, and she needs a decent camera for the trip. Now my mom being the a professonal photographer was looking through the bhphotovid catalog we got yesterday and found this one. Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z6
its a 6 MP and has a 12x optical zoom, should be good for out doors Effle tower and other places. But the down side is it take AA batteries, which seems to be the norm now a days, and it doesnt have great low light foucsing. I was wondering if you have anymore opinons on any other cameras i should look at. Thanks. PS i have a nikon coolpix 5900.

Nothing wrong with Lithium AA batteries - you can use the 2300 mah rechargeables and carry a small charger and spare set of 4.

The 12X zoom is good. 6 MP is plenty. Low light capability could be better - I use that a lot when traveling. Downside is a max ISO of 320 - but it does have IS. But - it is an inexpensive high zoom camera. Outdoors OK.

Here is a professional's review:

I don't think you need a super-zoom for most vacation shots. She may be best off with two cameras: something like a Fuji F11 for high quality and night shots, and a stabilized zoom like the Panasonic FZ-30. Too bad she doesn't have more lead time, or she could get into a DSLR and have time to practice. I don't know of super-zoom with great image quality, no noise problem, etc. that covers wide angle as well as telephoto.

thanks for that review i will go look at it

Ill take a look at that kodak

the DLSR is too much for her. Shes only 14 and just takes pics of random things.

If you need big zoom, make sure it has image stabilization. Otherwise it'll be useless with out a tripod. If big zoom is not a high priority, I'd suggest the Canon A610, which can be had for around $200, and is EXCELLENT in terms of speed and quality.

If she doesn't take too many available light shots, the flash device should take care of her indoor/nite shots. For the price, this is an excellent 6MP camera.

There are better, but the cost is super. if its stolen or lost. It won't hurt as much as the $500/600 versions. Perfect camera for a young lady.

if you want to go compact, i really love the canon elph's .... i have the lower end model, sd200 which is 3.2mp and i'm very pleased with its performance. it takes quick shots, nice color and quick focus. It'll take decent video clips too.

If you get the higher end one you should get even better quality pics. And the thing i like about them is that they are small enough to fit in your pants pocket. So you dont have to run around with something hanging from your neck or some bag dangling from your shoulder/belt.

just a suggestion

Hmm. I like that idea of being compact so that it can fit in a pocket. I will have to talk to her about that.
Are there any other opinons on specific cameras?
