My sister is the only person in the world

. . . about getting a new, free, computer for Christmas. Yeesh, she went from a P4 1.5Ghz to an A64 3200. Both systems had 512MB of RAM, both had 80GB hdds, both had CDRW/DVD combo drives, etc. The P4 was a hodge podge of left over parts I've had laying around over the years. Her new system is a Dell E521.

First she insisted I transfer over the floppy drive to her new system, which I did. Note, she has no floppies in her possession. The computers at her school have no floppy drive either. And lastly, we have no floppies in our house any more either. Her sole reason for wanting to keep the floppy drive? Her b/f has a floppy drive on his computer. It shouled also be noted that she has a 1GB USB mem stick, and both their systems have USB ports.

A day after I set her system up, she came down and complained that it was slower than her old one. I went and took a look at it. Seemed fine to me for its hardware. She made the claim that Winamp 5 dot something was taking forever to load. It opened for me without a problem. I know Winamp 5 to be a POS program, but it is her system and she can use the software she wishes.

After that, she complained that windows was sluggish. Keep in mind that the old system used Win2k and the new one uses WinXP. When I looked at it this time, she had installed Windowblind and StyleXP and loaded the UI up with so much bloat I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Over the last year, she has been complaining about how she didn't like the way Win2k looked, now she's complaining about the way WinXP performs . . . when running multiple 3rd party theme programs.

It will probably be something new tomorrow.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother . . .

The only option is to claim the PC for yourself and take it off the hands of that ungrateful person.

Oh, believe me, the though did cross my mind. I could always use another S@H box. Problem is, I have no way to safely, and cheaply, transport it back to AZ from MI.

yeah, I built my grandma a computer last year. Much faster than that emachine 1000mhz intel celeron 128mb machine she was originally using. I built her a athlon xp 3000 asus a7nx nfocre 2 motherboard, 1gb of ram. She still complains that it still slow, even when she uses aol. She using dial up for the internet connection, so that explains the slowness for the internet. She runs all these useless programs, such as weather bug, some internet answer machine and some other crap. I'll probably todo a fresh reinstall of her system.

for your sister computer, put another 512mb stick in there, that'll speed the system up more.

My parents bought that system for my brother, I am pretty sure the board will take a Pentium D, if she is complaining about speed.

UPS or FedEx?

Did you remove AOL and McCrapfee off the computer, those tend to slow stuff down a bit.

I have the same problem sometimes, people complain to you about computer problems and since you know a decent amount about them they act like the problem is your fault and you're obligated to fix it.

If she wants a better computer she should buy a new one or upgrade the one she got with her own cash. She should be grateful that was a great upgrade CPU wise. Next time just install Linux as the OS.

Right... an AMD system taking a Pentium D.....

The A64 3200+ should be fine for what his sister is doing, it is clear that the sister is having a PEBKAC issue.

Screw it. Tell her you have no idea what could be going on and that you've looked at everything but the folks at the Geek Squad could probably help her out if she calls them to come out and help her.

All new Dells run like crap until you reinstall windows without the extra crap. I have heard lots of people complain that their brand new Dells are slow.

Also up the ram. Windows will love you for that and run much faster. Who buys 512 nowadays? 😕

True. That system will take up to 4 gigs (4 x 1) of ram. 512 on that system would be underkill. Get her 1G and she'll be fine.

BTW, for anybody wondering, the 521 system is the AMD system and the 520 is the Pentium system.

with all that bloatware, i doubt even 2GB with core 2 processors would give good performance

She's 21, I removed AOL, Mcafee, plus a bunch of other crap, no pics.

She already threw out the box adn foam it came it as well . . .

"I just bought this $5,120 Alienware computer from Best Buy, but it's running so slow!"
"Well what did you install?"
"WeatherBug, McAfee Super Dooper Virus Free Gold Platinum Pro Edition, LimeWire, BearShare, KaZaA, Morpheus, Norton AntiVirus, AVG Gold, AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, Trillian, IRQ, Firefox, Opera, StyleXP, Y'z Dock, 150 gigs of Family Guy obtained through P2P and Bit Torrent, Computer Super Speeder Upper Memory Booster Enhancer, 5,420,0493 other superfluous unneccessary bloated pirated redundant run-at-startup programs."

Fscking system tray will have 50 icons in it. Morons. I'm glad I got out of the computer fixing business.

Are we long lost brothers with the same sister?

My sister found a way to complain about pretty much everything this entire xmas, I went to my parent's house for a few days and I've never been more glad to leave a place in my life because of her. I could fill volumes with the stories I have that would absolutely blow your mind.
