the send more invites hoping to get more gifts. Up until 2 months ago, i have never heard of a baby shower. I think the concept is dumb. What happened to working hard and buying your own stuff. Sheesh...

If you can't afford the baby, then don't have one. Its part of being a responsible adult.

If you don't want to go, don't go. If you RSVP'd, then you probably should go.

Yeah its supposed to be like the girls version of a guys bachelors party. That makes no sense to invite guys to one other then to be materalistic and try to get as much free stuff as you can I would think.

Guys would be bored to death at one of them and who would really want to see some guy striping and getting drunk on girly drinks :p

Or you could show up with a keg and brink your own stripper to it :)

No, that would be a bachelorette party. A baby shower is a party for an expectant mother.

heh, i went to a coworker's baby shower. I didn't bring anything though. They didn't have much friends here since they came to the US temporarily, so all the people @ work threw her one. It was great, since male/female ratio was 50/50, had plenty of beers around, and had a nice bbq @ the boss's house (had ocean view).

Typically the father of the child does not go to the mom's baby shower.

That's because he might run into the husband there. :p lol

The point of the baby shower is that it's part of the process of getting used to the idea that there's going to be a new person in the world sometime soon. It's a huge change from just being a couple - as any parent here will attest. For some moms (& dads) it's the first time that they seriously get treated as parents. It can be interesting.

Lots of dads and male guests at showers these days. At every one I've been to, the guys end up outside playing frisbee/tossing a ball, or gathered around the TV in another room. Just like they'll be after the kid is born, come to think of it.

There are a lot of gifts. Every parent quickly figures out that some of those "gifts" have been recycled through a lot of baby showers and never actually opened and used.

yeap i been to a few lately. its a good mix of male/females. granted the women are in one group and the men are in another (usually).

we did get a lot of "recycled" gifts. wich was fine. we just took them back to target and got gift cards.

But, I received an invitation in the mail.
Is it expected of everyone that receives an invitation to purchase a gift whether they go or not?
I know it's expected with weddings, but I have never been invited to a baby shower before.

Men dont go to the showers. If you still received an invite, make a brief appearance at the end of the shower.

Agreed .

Whats with guys being invited these days?

I dunno, it seems to me as if baby showers are giant 'by me a gift' pleas, they send invites to everyone they know, the bigger the net the more gifts they'll get.

lol...were you trying to be funny?

If I put it in my sig, people would complain.
"We know you are gay. You don't have to flaunt it."
If I don't put it in there, people don't know, and still complain...lol.
"Well I didn't know."
So I chose the happy medium of just putting in my sig that I am indeed male. That way anyone with a mind can figure it out over time...lol.

Why would a guy go to a baby shower?

My wife and I went to an event about a year ago that she told me was a birthday party. We got there and found out it was a baby shower so I grabbed my son and made a hasty exit leaving my wife there. Man, never have I been more happy to get out of a place.

Went to baby shower once with the wife...all the guys that got dragged to it ended up in the backyard by the grill and we all drank beer and play cards while the women were inside doing their thing. Not too bad if you don't get drag into the shower itself.
