my seti freezes!! help

is there a known issue with seti? when i allow it to run in minimized mode it locks up my system after a while....when i allow it to run maximized(which makes it go slower) it does fine...it's not overheating, already done a bit to fix that problem, if it existed in the first place. i'm running a duron 800, soyo syk7vta-b mobo win98se, 256mb ram....that seems adaquate to me!! what's up with that?!

It could be that your system is just not stable at the speed you're running at. Try raising the voltage to the CPU if your cooling will allow it.

Hi ,there is no known issue like this ,frankly I don't know.

Whether the graphics are being shown(which x2 WU times!🙁) or not the cpu loading is the same.
Are you sure it doesn't do it when maximised?
What cpu & m/brd temps are you getting?
Are you certain you heatsink is well mounted?

btw lol at your sig 🙂
Are you on Team Anandtech inccidently?

Okay...full recap so i don't leave much out:
i install seti, and only allow it to run as a screen saver while i'm away or over night, since i fear it'd lag me when playing CS or games like that...i decide to let it run 100% of the time, coincidentally about the same time i bought a new stick of ram......lockups started occuring...i immediatly suspected the ram, since seti runs fine on my athlon system minimized....running checks of ram and taking it out and switching slots and such...no effect....so i start thinking about sytem temps, i know that seti loads my cpu and it'll get hotter....so i close seti and the freezings stop..WOAH okay, so i go and buy some arctic sliver and cut a blowhole in the top of my case, slap a 120mm on the side and there we go, that should help with cooling a bit...so i bring seti back up minimzed, still freezes, tell it not to, let it just sit there....works fine and dandy....that's how i came to this conclusion...and no, it doesn't lock up while maximized, at least not on SETI's fault...it's going now and has been for the past 9 hours or so(yes, it REALLY makes it take a lot longer maximized, my athlon finishes units in 9 hours)...but with it running 100% of times it locks up after as soon as 20 minutes of normal use(checking mail, listening to mp3s), and no more than an hour passes.... my cpu temps are about 36 load, and 30 idle....which is why i don't suspect that, my mobo temp reports 27, yes my heatsink is on there fine, checked it when i put my ASII on there.... nope, not on team anandtech.....why, is that "standard" for 'em?

hmm ,I'm baffled ! ,maybe SETI has got corrupt & needs re-installing?😕

But seeing as you want to run it minimsed(a good idea🙂) ,why don't you ditch the slow GUI version for the text(CLi) version?.From the few times I have seen GUI ditched for CLi it has resulted in about a 25% reductin in WU time🙂.eg my fathers Athlon 700 classic went from 11hrs to 8.5 hrs🙂.
If you want to go for the CLi version then the easiest way to manage it & to also gain a WU storing ability is to use SETIDriver .The link to CLi is there too with instructions🙂.
Let us know if that also cures your freezing problems.

why, is that "standard" for 'em?
eh,sorry you lost me!😱😕

If you are not in a team then why not join TA? ,you'd be very welcome ,+ the guys & girls here are a friendly & helpful lot🙂.

thanks for your help assimilator, i think i will grab the CLi!! and i can download more than one unit at once? i'm on the page now, and it says i need the winnt command line something or other...what do i do? can i get a step by step?

Grab SetiDriver too. Put it in the same folder as the CLI client. Start setidriver and it will fire up CLI for you. Put a shortcut to Setidriver in your startup folder to fire up setidriver automatically when you start the computer. If you are running Win98 you need to go to Windows/system/conagent.exe and right click on it and select properties. Then go to misc.. Then uncheck the box that says "warn if still active" under terminate. This will let windows close the CLI client at shutdown.

🙂

Oh, and what Assimilator1 said <<If you are not in a team then why not join TA? ,you'd be very welcome ,+ the guys & girls here are a friendly & helpful lot>>

😉

Assimilator1, I think he was making a joke. 😉

/like maybe all the guys on Team AnandTech are ... well, mentally challenged. 😀

CLI is the winnt client. it runs fine in nt, 2000 (nt5), and 98. i think it runs in 95 as well, but i'm not sure about that.

can someone please explain to me this joke that i made?!?! i dont' get it!! you seem to get it smokeball, and now you've gone and confused me and assimilator

thanks, i'm downloding it now

I guess I read something in there that wasn't there. 😱

Therefore, the joke is on me. 🙂

You never did answer Assimilator1's (at least I didn't see it) question when he wrote:

Smokeball
LMAO @ you! 😀 ,sorry but that just cracked me up!😉😱
But you're right he hasn't explained that little confusing line

......heheh

:Q sorry 😉

Well, I'm totally confused by the previous messages. 🙂

Anyway, if you aren't on Team AnandTech, please join us! 😀
