With double wishbones sprung by torsion bars in front and the leaf sprung solid axle it rode great. Most cars actually have inferior MacPherson struts while every pickup has double wishbones up front.

Not this shit again. Some of the best handling cars out there (M3, STI, etc) use struts.
 
Are you both referring to the energy crisis of the 70's when we were running out of oil?

Or are you talking about the energy crisis like we had in California as it shut down the electrical grid?

the world hasnt stopped "running out of oil" there is just more of it than in the 70s
