When I first started at the lab I work at in august 2000 we had nothing but PowerMac G4 with huge 21" monitors. The mouse on them are way too small for any normal sized adult and its shaped like a hockey puck so it isnt comfortable to use. We got nothing but complaints from students about these machines. What does the director do? Orders 30 Mac G4 Cubes!! They have the wonderful mouses where the whole mouse is one giant button! Even more complaints cause the DVD drives dont work most of the time. Finally we get a new director and we order nothing but PCs. Smooth sailing since. Easy to use, easy to find software for. If any of them break its easy to get replacements and/or work done. When we were all Mac, whenever one of them crapped out on us we just threw it in the corner cause the Mac Techs around here rape you on hourly fees. So in other words I don't have much love for Macs personally.

wtf good are macs good for nowdays?

i agree

Good video editing tools, actually...

That's pretty much all they are good for these days.

well, let's be honest, what do students actually use computers at school for anyways?? for the most part it's simple web browsing and word processing. aside from that, there's video editing and graphics, which macs actually do a decent job of. So, if schools get a great deal on macs, then why not buy them?

A PC can do the same things as a mac. A mac can't do much more than just that though. I've had to use macs for some of my CG course and I can't stand them. They are so finicky and touchy that it's not worth the trouble, because you can't "experiment" with them.

NOT, As a hardcore PC guy I never figured I'de ever own a Mac. Last year I custom built an OSX box, and I fell in love with the OS. The hardware kinda is cool but not all that advanced. But the OS is waaaaaayyyyyyy cool.

So, I bought a 12" Ti Book. I'm in the basement sitting in an easy chair surfing at listing to MP3's.

Umm... students write programs, use certain programs for certain tasks (such as Matlab), etc. Some programs such as Cadence are so complicated that they require a separate administrator just to make sure computers that are used for that program are functioning correctly!

It not so much the hardware as much as the infrastructure already built in that favors macs for doing layout and design. Most people who rely heavily on quark Xpress should know what i mean.

You don't say? That'll be one hell of a site...I should talk to my friend, who works for ITD/ITCS and see if I can watch them install them :)

bah, my school just got a new building with 3 floors of 2.66 GHz P4's with 18" LCDs. :p:D

I think there are a couple of Apples in there somewhere, though they're probably G4's
