In March, these guys said they post the computer requirements in April. Now that April has come and gone, they post this:
  • We are actively working with computer vendors to secure special pricing for DAAP students and therefore recommend that you wait until further notice to make your computer purchase. This will assure the lowest prices and latest models. We will post the requirements on the web site when the special pricing is available.
What are the chances it will be Macs, if they are truly looking for the best prices?

I think it's ridiculous that a campus would move to a single platform, at my uni, we've got PCs, Macs, *nix, and Sun boxes available to all the students as with certain courses / majors it's important to be aware of the other computing platforms out there, regardelss of how small your school is.

I voted for Macs, just because these guys are probably going to be putting Windows 2000 or Windows XP on all those PC's when they deploy them. Just what the world needs... Another big bunch of poorly administrated Windows boxes, most of which will be plagued with various worms, viruses, and spyware applications within a week of them being plugged into the network. :disgust:

Let them do it - when the next Windows worm gets out, they'll have ZERO computing, as opposed to having some Macs that are still running. They're putting all their eggs in one basket which just isn't a good idea.

Considering you have professors screaming for Macs, give 'em what they want. Those older profs don't like learning new tricks. I have many digital artist friends who have adapted to the PC world (especially for 3d modeling where 3D studio Max is an often mandatory PC only app), but the most productive graphic artists I have worked with have all specifically requested macs.

If the powers that be do axe the Apple presence at your school, for gods sake make sure they at least allow some of the systems students have access to be linux/unix boxes. Nothing like the IT guys slacking off and having a worm take down every computer in the whole school.

Familiarity with Macs is still handy in much of the graphic arts world, and for a sense of the sort of role Macs can play in opening up people's minds about operating systems and user interface issues, just read Anand's macdates.

(note: despite having a P4 2.8 rig for gaming, I still use a '99 Powerbook as my primary productivity machine at home - you can pry it, and OmniGraffle, from my cold dead hands as well).

Where is the poll option for both? Yes, supporting both is a bit more of a hassle (but not much) and offers many benefits.

Yeah, like less mac users will commit suicide, but that's not really a benefit

I have to say...I think macs are crap now too. Older macs did have the graphic advantage and I always said that. But when I finally took some graphics classes and was required to use the macs, I felt the PC had clearly surpassed them in speed, reliability, and of course capability. I installed photoshop on one of the libraries PCs to do my graphics work, because I couldn't deal with my zip disks never ejecting, total hard locks, 20 minute saves of a 5meg file (WTF!) and various other slow response problems that often required a reboot. The interface was slightly different on OSX, but that I picked up quickly. I never got used to the eject problems.

Its like macs are going through that open architecture temper tantrum PCs went through 10 years ago, only this time its not as funny! Until they get their act together, I'd just assume have nothing to do with them.

I think the only reason they're still used at this point for graphics work, is because no one wants to change. Not because they are supposedly better.
