My salary just got cut by 20% and it feels awful

In order to prevent layoffs, my company is cutting everyone's work hours from the normal 40 hours down to 32 hours. I'm searching for a house right now so this is a bad time.

And I have to deal with my fiance who is freaking out right now. So how do I calm her down? I also suggested she try to look harder for her own job.

Freaking out? Yeah instead of stressing you about it she should do something about it. Hours are scarce everywhere. So glad especially to be out of retail where you have 36 hours one week and 12 the next.

Work or don't complain...

Tell her it's either 32 hours for now or if you divorce her then she'll have a total of 0 work hours worth of money. lol

32 >>>> 0

I feel for you OP. Its amazing how crushed my morale is from where I work having trouble with revenue. They want more work, no raise, worse hours, harsher boss trying to CYOA, the boss above him trying to CYOA, my coworkers all trying to CYOA. Its bad.

Yup, squeezing the most out of the few and if you prove yourself dependable you get reamed. Lazy bastards coast and get the goodies. Quite the employers market.

I got a 20% raise last year because I haven't had one in like 4 years. However that is pretty much gone now :|

Sell the expensive handbag and diamond. Problem solved.

Also, remember the top 20% of your pay is the highest taxed. Your net loss is probably around 10%

Sucks to hear that OP.

IMO I'd probably start looking for a job right now, at worst it gives you practice for if you need to find a job for real, and if you get a better job offer you just move.

It could be worse. They could have cut your salary by 20% and still expected you to work 40 hours a week.

It could also be a whole lot better. Your point being?

They did that to me at my previous job. Was doing a solid 50 hours a week at $40 an hour and then they slashed 20 hours a week. Took me a few months but I landed a solid directors job and decided never to do consulting work again. Good luck OP.

Tommy I feel bad for you. Well for the job thing, the fiance is the monster you made.

But it could be worse. If I have kids right now and actually have a mortgage, I might be in trouble. My fiance is freaking out thinking the reduce salary could carry on to next year.
