In contrast to all the other threads complaining about roommates and all the arguments that have spawned from them, let's hear from some people that are having/had positive dorm experiences with their roommates. I don't want everybody thinking that going to college will be hell because of roommates.

Background info : My roommate and I are both from the same town (we live like a mile away) in the NW suburbs of Chicago and I became friends with him in the 9th grade or so and we just sort of became best friends after the 11th grade. We both ended up going to the same school after certain unpleasantries with other schools and decided, we both love the same stuff so why not just room together?

We listen to the same music, both play guitar, have similar majors, don't get on each other's nerves and have no problems whatsoever.

So I want to say a nice jolly "HA!" to all those people who told you that you couldn't live with your best friend without hating each other. We had exactly 0 problems so far so let's hear all those other great stories about the fun times you had with your roommates/floor buddies in college.

My roommate just gave me a 48X CDROM to trade for a slot-loading CDROM that I needed for a project. :D

BTW rgwalt, I see you finally corrected the grammar in your sig. "effect" not "affect". Bravo!

I've had really terrible luck with roomates, but my roomate Jeff is really cool.

He's not out to screw anybody.

He just needs to stop eating malt vinegar and garlic sauce.

Bleck...

I've been best friends with my roommates for 5 years (since my frosh year), and been living them (4 roommates) for 3 years. We're all best friends....and best men since some of our group have been getting married.

My roommates and I all eat each others' food (within reason). We're fine with this becase we know that the others will return the favor in some way. (i.e. you're short of cash and don't realize it until ater you've ordered dinner...or....you pay your roomates rent, and he pays for your new mobo/ram/cpu when it fries a month later).

My roommates totally had my back when some dude started harrassing a lady friend of mine last week. I got in his face and told him to leave and the second he was about to get physical all my boys came to my side ready and willing. We all had another of my roomy's back when some other random racist dude got up in his face for being from the "Sand-n!gger States" (WTF...he's from Burhma anyway). (in case you can't tell: I feel that being willing to put yourself in harms way for a friend says something about your loyalty)

My roommates have all been cool for as long as I've known them. School has come (and gone for some of us), Girls and relationships have come and gone, but we still stick together.

We all have a tight bond/brotherhood and won't likely let our connections fade.

That depends on the context of the sentence. It could work both ways.

For my first year at college, I decided to room with one of my best friends from hs. I had been to his house many times before and his room seemed pretty clean/organized, he wasnt too much of a slacker, and we had similar tastes in music.. so I figured living with him would be fine.

It started out pretty well, but I guess that his mom had to keep him in line at home, cuz by second quarter everything changed. The room was gross.. his half of the room was covered in dirty clothing and old papers... the room even smelled funky.. ugh.. that along with his inverted sleep cycle (he woke up at 11pm for hw and slept during the day) kept me out of my room for most of the day.. i ended up sleeping in the lounge once or twice, using the public comps for papers, no mp3s, no comp games..

I definately dont hate him, we had lots of fun.. i think we're better friends now than before college... but now i have a single for this year :)

My roommate is cool. I thought we'd clash at first because he told me right off the bat that he likes to party hard, but he actually turned out to be a great roommate. It's a personal decision of mine not to drink but he's okay with that, and besides the various alcohols in the fridge, there's no way anyone would know that either of us drink.

He and I have similar sleep cycles, and we both study hard most of the time. His friends are cool, and while sometimes he stays out really late (late, as in, coming home at noon the next day), he and I sort of have an unwritten rule that we won't bring the loud, obnoxious party back to the dorm room. Coming in drunk is cool with me as long as there aren't 6-10 other drunk guys coming back with him.

We've agreed that it's cool to let girls sleep over as long as they stay out of each other's beds. He's had a random girl sleep over once, and I'll eventually have my GF over sometime...but I'm really happy the way stuff turned out. It'll be a good year.

I've had a pretty similar experience. We've been friends for the last 5 years and been roommates for the last 1 year. No major problems so far. Suitemates on the other hand are another story.

My roomate was awesome in college ( well, besides me having to bail him out once :) ) I had the dorm to myself the first semester because I was the one lucky one out :) Second semester, he joined up. Was great. I like the room temp so low most people would wear a coat ( like 55-60 degrees ) He was the exact same! It was awesome! Just that made him my instant best friend. He loved me too, because I was one of the few with a truck to drive :) The only one on my floor. I made great money being a taxi driver that semester :D

I'm up in South Bend, and a friend of mine and I drove all the way to Moline, IL (state-line between IL and Iowa) to see them two weekends ago. We are going to the show in East Lansing on the 19th as well (w/ Meshuggah). I can't make the Indy show because of work/class.
