my roommate is addicted to UT2003

My roommate is addicted to UT2003. He comes home from school, sits down in front of his monitor and if he's not playing the game, he's on some forum or irc channel talking with people that do. He does this for about 3-5 hours then he eats dinner and studies as little as possible then plays the game until about 2-3AM. He has a 9 O'Clock class. He admits that he's addicted, but he does not understand the consequences. He thinks he has a social life. UT2003 is his social life. I wonder how he thinks he can pass his classes at this rate. He's been addicted for about a year and a half. First UT, now UT2003.

what do I do?
 
Iteresting. I've been kinda watching the transition from "social life" to "social internet life". Where one can completely take over the other. You can have a social life and never leave your monitor. We all remember the online weddings and whatnot, meeting through games or whatever. Very wierd, this transition. Embrace it, you shall.
 
I do the same thing with Counter-Strike/GTA3, I really do have a social life, my bed time is after 4am, I don't go to class, I have A's and B's.

I don't see how he's doing anything wrong. 😉

It got real bad the summer before last. I would get up, start playing, 5hrs later I would eat, go bakc to playing, sleep.

lol sounds a lot like me, except the gaming part right now... because.. instead of game... i stay up late and.. i .... post on ATOT... and... uhhh.... hm. don't do much else. listen to music, chat... i guess that's about it.
 
hmmm. interesting responses.

ths type of addiction is something I myself have struggled with a lot. I got addicted to the online rpg Lineage for awhile. Fortunately, so did one of my RL buddies - I could see all the negative consequences it was having on him so I realized that those things were probably happening to me too. Anyways, I figure I'm not going to have much luck getting any poontang sitting in front of the computer all day.

no sh!t!!! hence my post a few days ago about not being able to find a single populated server with a ping under 100, and i'm on a college OC3 connection :|

Try having a 30 ping in game. Until you shoot or someone shoots at you. Then it spikes to about 600. Makes it hard to play. We still try.
 
HAVE ANY OF YOU GUYS HEARD OF MUD (yes, the multiplayer text based thing)?

Mudders are the true addicts. Some of you guys have no idea.

Zug likes to think he is a good UT player and mud admin. But the amount of his yelling at other players when he dies on UT really shows something about his ability to kill people, or better yet die, a lot.

actually i only yell at the bots, even though the bots are better than 99% of UT players anyway bleh.
 
One of my roommates got pretty bad with CS two years ago. It was really bad the second semester that year, when he really got into it. That semester, he set up his schedule so he only had classes on Tuesday/Thursday, so he had a 4-day weekend every weekend to play games, pretty much. I mean, he went out and all, he has a lot of friends, but when he was in the room, he was playing CS or sometimes working on a Computer Science program. He moved off campus last year and hasn't gotten around to getting DSL, so he can't play that much anymore. He comes over every now and then and tries to hijack one of our computers to play.
 
UT is better than UT 2k3 though. How can anyone be addicted to UT 2k3? It gets quite boring after a while 🙁

Maybe I'd enjoy it more without a dialup connection 😱

The gameplay is actually quite skill-based. I find a good game of ctf or bombing run, without those stupid mutators quite fun, nearly as entertaining as CS was for me...and trust me, i was sooo addicted to CS.
 
Am I the only one who thinks Q2,Q3, Unreal, 2k3 are basically the same game? I don't really care for 2K3, it just feels like I'm playing Q3 with little better graphics.

I would have to say Q2 is still my fav, just because it was the first FPS that I really got into.

Exactly! And this is why I find UT2K3 a failure...

Not true about the UT2K3 and Q3
the engines are completely different feeling if you ask me.
Q3 has always had the best feeling engine and as things are going, always will.
I like each of them for different things.
UT and UT2K3 are obviously more similar than the ID counterparts.
monolith games are not as good as ID software.. but UT2K3 is a freaking AWESOME game!
