My roommate had a virus, will reinstalling Win98 automatically format?

Does win98 automatically format upon installation? It didn't give an option for clean install or not. Should she reformat, or does Windows take care of this?

If she's willing to, she should reformat her computer. Reinstalling windows without a format is not gonna get rid of the virus.

No, it doesn't format when it installs, unless there is no formatted drive already. iNo712 is right. In fact if you have a corrupted file it won't repair it most of the time. FDISK and use the /u command at the end for an unconditional format. It gets it all.

Line should look like this: format c: /u

Okay, thank you very much! I will have her reformat. (I should say, SHE thinks it is a virus, but Norton said there were no virus. It did detect close to 100 errors, 4 of which could not be corrected though.)

Thanks for the help

A very important thing to note!

Run the Norton anti-virus program from DOS. Running from DOS can eliminate any of "Nortons" GUI infected files from being intensionally bypassed by the virus.
