My roommate deleted my whole apps folder on my FTP site.

This action should be punishable by death! He just waltzed in through the network share that I so kindly put on for him to use, and what does he do? Deletes the whole thing! He is so lucky he is gone for spring break!

<< why on earth would you give him full permissions to your stuff ? >>

Baffled, it's a network share, as you know, the only way to add security to a network share is through messing with the NTFS properties, OR requiring a specific login, both of which are a tad bit time consuming. Guess what I am doing right now 🙂

Was this your "apps" folder or your "appZz" folder? (ie- does he have some kind of bug up his ass about you hosting warez...if that were the case...and nuked the folder in a fit of righteous indignation?)

Or is he just a dumbass?

uh. dont share permissions have the options for full control, read, and change?

how much stuff did you lose anyway?

You did have backups, right?

And I suspect you'll never again question the necessity of proper rights.

dakata24, those permissions are VERY generious and don't apply.

I lost a lot. And no, it wasn't an appZz folder 😛 but that most likely is the problem, he got tired of the bandwidth being taken up.

did you backup ?

Can you get onto his rig? Sounds like it's payback time to me, and I'm sure our evil minions here on ATOT have plenty of suggestions for you.😉

i'm not running any additional security on most of my directories on NTFS and the only share is the admin one, which my roommate doesn't know the pass of.

I could always make it secret like my other ones (www and private) but sue me for trying to be generous!

no backups, it was my backup 🙂

hmm. maybe he was playing an early april fools joke.. you sure he didnt copy the folder over to his pc and then delete... 😛

i have all my share permissions set read only for that very reason... well, to prevent someone from accidentally deleting something. .

sucks to be you....

don't you know you can set permissions on shares in addition to NTFS permissions?
you ARE running at least NT 4.0 or better right?

I haven't used 2k much, but a very quick look at my sharing on my XP Pro box looks like this:

Right click on folder
Sharing and security
Share this folder box is checked, uncheck the "network users can change my files" box...
