My roommate asked me about my credit limit, and asked for my social security #

Yeah, I figured he wasn't asking this stuff for fraudulent purposes as I am well aware of the hurdles international students need to go through. I guess I was just taken aback he asked me to do all this for him. I think he has friends in the area, as I know he stayed with someone else a couple of nights before my subletter moved out. Maybe I'm the closest thing he has to an American friend?

Anyways, I'll definately tell him to go the prepaid route.

You don't owe him any favors. Tell him to go pre-paid on the phone. He can get a prepaid "credit" card from any number of stores that he can use to buy the laptop (assuming he's getting it online, if he's not, tell him to pay cash for it.)

odd, when I used my Sony Visa Card in Taiwan, I got the best rate of the day with no extra charges....

No harm in getting him a phone under ur social. Its just for credit purposes. You can still have the phone under his name with his billing after 6 weeks. I dont see any real trouble here, but thats just me...ive helped out my friends, but i dont know this guy..so... u decide.
Tell me you Social Security number please. There is no harm in it!

read the entire post... there is a big IF ... uncjigga can trust him with it.

There is a difference between not using deo and trusting someone.

His new roommate is a stranger to him. Why would he trust the guy with his SSN?

1. Force him to do things the U.S. way. i.e. use toilet paper, not a disgusting jug
2. Tell him to buy a disposable cell phone. They're $20 or so and you purchase phone cards to use them, don't need a SS# for that. Otherwise, he'll just have to wait. Unlike air, food or water, cell phones are not necessary to one's survival.
3. Don't buy him anything unless he ponies up the cash FIRST. There have been many, many stories about roommates screwed over by cash. It'll be bad enough if he somehow "forgets" to pay his rent every month.

as far as i remember, i think all those have been american 😛

One thing that everyone has ignored: If he can pay you by check, and the check is good, why can't he pay for his laptop by check? Something is wrong there. If he needs the laptop FAST, then he can go withdraw cash from the bank.

Or is it that the check is drawn on a foreign bank?

I haven't read about the ass jug thing yet, but my gut says get rid of this guy if he's not on a lease. In most states special rules apply to roomates, and evition is MUCH easier than if you don't have to actually live with the person.

No matter WHAT, don't give your information to ANYONE (ssn, credit card numbers, time of day...) you weren't connected to by ambilical cord at some time. And password protect your computer.

Yes, this is the same guy who doesn't use toilet paper. I really need to work on my screening process.

Anyways, my roommate asked me about my credit limit to see if I could buy a laptop for him. Apparently his Indian credit card company will overcharge him considerably for buying things in American dollars. He offered to pay me by check.

Later on he asked me about my social security number, to see if I would cosign for him to get a cellular phone. It'll be at least 6 weeks before he can get his own SS#, and without that he can't get a cellphone apparently.

I have never, ever EVAR had a bad roommate, and never understood all the "I hate my roommate" threads on AT before. But this guy just makes me feel uncomfortable! I think his expectations for the roommate relationship are a bit much (he's offered to cook me dinner and seemed upset that I prefer to take meals at different times than he does.)

Maybe you can suggest a pay as you go phone.

Has he taken any blood samples? Have you seen anyone walking around campus that looks suspiciously like you lately?

Does Dell allow payment by check (I think they might!) I well see if he can do that.

He has a Chase bank account here in the US (he paid me rent from that account--still haven't deposited the check though so who knows if its good?)

ROFL

If you're uncomfortable about it, don't do it. If he'll be paying you by check, make sure it clears first. Yada, yada, yada.

... My dad knows all of those things, except maybe time of day. 🙁

Start like this,

"Hey I was watching this T-Mobile prepaid cellphone commercial, and right after that funny charmin commercial came on... You know the one with the bears?"

if he cant get a fvcking cellphone because he has to wait 6 weeks then he should maybe get a fvcking prepaid phone which you can get nearly ANYWHERE without a problem.
